Millroy takes another podium at Silverstone
25th August 2010
Formula Renault UK, Rounds 13 & 14 on the Silverstone National Circuit saw Ollie Millroy show yet more outstanding pace, race craft and results.
Unlike most weekends, this one consisted of three races, due a round being rained off at Brands Hatch in early May.
Ollie qualified 12th on the Brands Hatch GP Circuit (with his previous team) so on Saturday afternoon he had his work cut out. Ollie got a good start off the line, and managed to grab 5 places on lap one, and after settling in Ollie managed to finish 5th on the drying track on Saturday.
With the tricky conditions during Saturday morning’s qualifying session, a wrong choice of tyres meant Ollie qualified 13th for race 1. During the dry qualifying session in the afternoon, Ollie put together a fantastic last lap to take 3rd for race 2, with other Manor team mates not too far away.
Race 1, Ollie got a tremendous start, with team mate Will Stevens in 11th being tagged by another car, Ollie took 10th after turn 1. Now that Ollie had a good run, he went down the outside into Brooklands which in previous races had gained him places, however with a spinning Fortec car ahead Ollie had nowhere to go and with the track still damp, Ollie couldn’t make anymore room between him and the car rolling backwards onto the racing line. The two cars made contact, putting Ollie out of this race.
Race 2, starting from 3rd, Ollie’s hopes were high for this race; points, podium or even a win was in sight. Alongside team mate again, Ollie’s start was flawless, defending his position into turn 1. Ollie now was at risk of needing a new nose cone each lap, being so close to team mate Stevens – Ollie was determined for 2nd very early on in the race. Once the race seemed to have calmed down at the front, a back marker caused havoc by swerving back onto the racing line pushing Stevens wide on turn 1, Ollie took advantage and grabbed 2nd, with team mate Williamson thinking the same thing challenged Ollie and took the place. Ollie’s outstanding performance earned him the 3rd place overall.
Ollie beaming as ever said “I was really happy with the weekend. I felt myself and the team put in a solid performance every time we were on track and I was delighted with another podium to finish the weekend. The car was mega and the team did an amazing job to get it fixed in time for Race 2 as well, all credit to them!”
