Celebrity Kart Challenge

LLOYD CONFIRMS PARTICIPATION IN CHARITY-LED CELEBRITY KART RACEEmerging motor racing talent Daniel Lloyd is delighted to confirm his participation in next month’s BP Ultimate Celebrity Kart Challenge at Birmingham NEC – a star-studded charity event featuring some of the biggest names in world motorsport. As a regular feature of the annual Autosport International Show each January, the endurance based kart race sees teams of seven drivers pitted against each other with the aim of raising as much as possible for charity. This year, the accumulated funds will go to the incredibly worthwhile Richard Burns Foundation, a charity established in memory of the former World Rally Champion who very sadly lost his battle with brain cancer in November 2005. Poignantly, the charity is one which means a great deal to Daniel and his family as his father Neil recovered from a brain tumour nine years ago.Scammonden-based Daniel will team up for the event with World Rally Championship contender Jari-Matti Latvala (Finland), WRC star Chris Atkinson (Australia) and Huddersfield’s own World Superbike Championship graduate Tom Sykes – a race winner and title challenger in the 2008 British Superbike Championship.Truly one of the most exciting line-ups confirmed for the NEC spectacular, Daniel’s team will run under the banner ‘Racing4Richard’ in deference to the late Richard Burns. The squad will also feature SMRC Legends Cars Champion Carol Brown and two, yet-to-be-selected, public drivers who will each donate £300 to charity.“The Celebrity Kart Challenge is always fantastic fun but the most important part is raising as much as possible for charity”, said 16-year-old Daniel, “The Richard Burns Foundation is very close to my heart as my dad Neil had a brain tumour several years ago. Thankfully, he was one of the lucky ones so it means a lot to me to be racing for such an incredible charity.“Obviously we want to go out there and win. I’ve taken part in the event for a few years but my team this year is really exciting. It’s a privilege to be part of the Racing4Richard line-up and to be competing alongside Tom, Jari-Matti, Chris and Carol is fantastic. Hopefully Tom and I can also fly the flag high for Huddersfield and West Yorkshire!”In 2009 Daniel will, of course, compete in the British Touring Car Championship-supporting ELF Renault Clio Cup with title winning squad Team Pyro and his new race car will actually appear at Autosport International on the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Stars of Tomorrow karting stand – the teenage ace a former Stars of Tomorrow Scholarship winner.Autosport International opens to trade and media visitors on Thursday, 8th January, with the televised 2009 BP Ultimate Celebrity Kart Challenge following on Friday, 9th January. The public days of the show are Saturday, 10th January, and Sunday, 11th January.
