Fish batters GP Masters opposition

Simon Fish guided his Ensign N180 to victory at Spa-Francorchamps today in the opening GP Masters race of the weekend. The Brit, whose Unipart-liveried car suffered an engine failure last time out at Zandvoort, took pole position for the 25-minute race, out-qualifying the Williams FW07 of Richard Meins. Fish made the best start to head the pack, but his lead was eroded when a lengthy safety car period was needed due to Paul Grant heavily shunting his Trojan. On the restart, Fish repelled local hero Jean-Michel Martin (Fittipaldi F8) to take his first GP Masters win by just three-tenths of a second, while Mauro Pane guided his Embassy-liveried Lola T370 to third place, from the 22 starters, on his Masters debut.David Mercers Spice SE90 took the CanAm Interserie Challenge race, the British dentist establishing a commanding lead over the Porsche 962 of Christophe DAnsembourg and Peter Meyrick (Spice), despite wet conditions. Leo Voyazides guided his Lola T280 to honours in the sports-prototype division, while Andy Newall was the leading CanAm driver home having started his McLaren M8F from the pit lane. A suspected oil pressure problem brought the race preparation ace to the pits after the installation lap but with the gremlins cleared, he stormed from 20th to seventh by flagfall. The Masters Historic Racing teams are back in action at Spa today
