Berlin to host Formula E race in 2014

Berlin has been announced as the latest host city for Formula E, the proposed new series for electric cars, when it debuts next year.A launch event was held in the German capital earlier this week, with the Formula E test car. Berlin joins the likes of London, Rio de Janeiro, Bangkok, Beijing and Los Angeles, on the list of cities for the first season of the all-new series, which is scheduled for September 2014.The Berlin event will take place on a custom-built circuit on the apron of the city's former Tempelhof Airport. Alejandro Agag, the head of Formula E Holdings, which is promoting the series, said: "We are delighted to be in Berlin and very grateful to the senator and to the Berlin authorities for welcoming our championship to their city."

Senator Cornelia Yzer, who has responsibility for economics, technology and research in Berlin, added: "Berlin, as an international city and leading metropolis of electric mobility is an ideal venue for Formula E. We are pleased to be able to host the event in this cosmopolitan city and for Berlin to present new and innovative technologies."The new Formula E cars, currently in development, are being built by a consortium including Dallara, McLaren, Renault F1 and Williams.
