NART spider realises $27.5m at Auction

The famed 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider by Scaglietti - owned by legendary collector Eddie Smith Sr. sells at RM's Monterey Auction for $25m (plus $2.5m commission)

The 2nd highest price achieved at auction for a car - Racecar customer John Collins of Talacrest starts the bidding at $16m and goes to $20m before it was hammered out to $25m - with the winner rumoured to be Lawrence Stroll - who is worth according to Forbes over $2bn.

Lots of people are speculating that the market in these rare Ferraris is overheating - but lets face some facts here - to Stroll this car represents probably just 1% of his net worth - he is a complete Ferrari nut and has one of the most amazing Ferrari collections in existence - what is he going to do with his money if he does not feed his passion for old Ferraris? - I doubt he has got a mortgage to worry about anyway :)

Yes - lots of 2nd division stuff that is being dragged up by the big dog cars do look expensive today - but the appetite for the serious stuff attracting bidders like Stroll is pretty healthy based on what sold at Monterey this weekend.

Good luck to Stroll - he is probably the right custodian for the next stage in this car's life - he probably saw this as a one-off opportunity to buy the car.

Anyway I don't think John from Talacrest is too peeved that he lost out on the NART - he sold his Ferrari 288 GTO Evolution at the weekend as well as a Ferrari 250 Lusso and a Ferrari 275 GTB Competition - and bought a Mille Miglia works entrant Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider

Here's details on the NART - which Steve McQueen unsuccessfully tried to buy off Eddie in period after his own example was rear ended in California:

- Single-ownership from new- Purchased new by Eddie Smith Sr., of North Carolina- Matching-numbers, fully restored example- One of only 10 highly desirable N.A.R.T. Spiders ever built- Proceeds to benefit charity
