Maldon, Essex, 27th June: JD Classics will be thrilling crowds at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with the glorious-sounding V6 engine of its Ford Cologne Capri Works.

Evoking memories of the golden age of touring car racing, the Cologne Capri Works has been expertly prepared by JD Classics’ race workshop team and will run in one of the festival’s most-anticipated classes: Classic Touring Icons. Sharing the driving duties will be historic racer Chris Ward and journalist, TV presenter and professional racing driver, Amanda Stretton.

JD Classics’ Cologne Capri Works certainly has a celebrated competition history. Originally built to Cologne specification in 1973 by Broadspeed for Ford Motor Co. Ltd, it was first driven in the Kent-Castrol Belgium Touring Championships where, powered by a 3.0-litre Westlake V6 engine, it won convincingly.

It returned to England to compete in the Tourist Trophy Meeting the same year, driven by legendary touring car racer Andy Rouse, before being sold to Bo Emanuelsson who won the 1974 Swedish Championship. In 1975 it was rebuilt by Ford Cologne with a Ford-Cosworth 24-valve V6 engine developing 460hp at 8,750rpm. Emanuelsson won across Europe with the car and was even faster than Jochen Mass at the fearsome Nurburgring.

Completely rebuilt by JD Classics’ expert race workshop team two years ago, it has competed in many historic races, including the Spa Six Hours Meeting, Algarve Classic Festival and Donington Historic Festival.

Showing the breadth of its historic motor racing collection, JD Classics will also be exhibiting its Jaguar R1 Formula 1 car at Goodwood, a car driven by Eddie Irvine during Jaguar’s maiden F1 season in 2000. It will be on static display throughout the weekend.

Derek Hood, JD Classics’ Managing Director, commented: “The Goodwood Festival of Speed continues to be one of the biggest highlights of the motoring calendar for car enthusiasts of all ages – and JD Classics is very proud to take part.

“Our race workshop did an incredible job re-building the Capri Cologne Works a few years back – a fact that’s underlined by its recent performance on the European Historic racing circuit. It’s a fabulous example of one of the most-revered classic touring cars and I know it will prove a huge hit with the Goodwood crowds.”

TV presenter and racing driver Amanda Stretton added: “It’s a huge honour to be asked by JD Classics to drive this stunning – and very rare – Capri Cologne Works at Goodwood. The race workshop has done an incredible job in preparing the car; the quality of their expertise is just remarkable. I can’t wait to strap myself into the driving seat and fire up that amazing 460hp engine.”
