Maldon, Essex, Wednesday 30th July: One of the world’s biggest classic motor racing festivals, this year’s Silverstone Classic was better than ever with over 1,000 historic racing cars taking to the track over three days of high-octane competition.

JD Classics was once again delighted to be invited, and brought a stunning line-up of historic racers including a 1974 Cologne Capri Works, which competed in the Jet Super Touring Car Trophy with none other than Touring Car legend Steve Soper at the wheel.

JD Classics’ Costin Lister competed in the Stirling Moss Trophy for pre-1961 Sports Cars, driven by historic ace Chris Ward, while the Cooper T33 Jaguar was entered in the RAC Woodcote Trophy, driven again by Chris Ward, joined by John Young. As ever, the expert JD Classics race team backed up the cars and drivers.

Having started from third in the Stirling Moss Trophy race, Chris Ward piloted the Costin Lister to a brilliant second place, while in the Jet Super Touring Car Trophy races, the Ford Cologne Capri competed in a 41-car field of more modern Super Tourers and Group A Touring Cars. In the first race, Steve Soper battled to finish 10th overall and first in class – a fantastic result given the field – while in the second race, John Young drove brilliantly to finish 12th overall and again first in class.

From pole position in the RAC Woodcote Trophy race, the Cooper T33 suffered a mid-race puncture, but re-joined and completed a succession of fastest lap times to finish in a brilliant fourth place, just 1.5 seconds off a podium position and third in class.

Derek Hood, JD Classics’ Managing Director, commented: “Now in its 24th year, the Silverstone Classic just gets better with so many incredible historic cars and, of course, one of the world’s best circuits to race on.

“Congratulations to Steve Soper in our Cologne Capri Works who showed off a touring car driving master class in a very competitive field. With great drives in our Costin Lister and Cooper Jaguar, Chris Ward and John Young once again showed why they are so well respected in historic racing.“All of this wouldn’t be possible, though, without the passion and expertise of the JD Classics race team. As ever, they excelled themselves.”

JD Classics would like to send its deepest condolences to the family and friends of historic motor racing driver Denis Welch, who died at the weekend following an accident in the second Jack Brabham Memorial Trophy race at the Silverstone Classic.

The 69-year-old was an experienced racer, founder of a Healey specialist business and a very popular character at historic events. Derek Hood said: “We’ve all known Denis for such a long time; both in terms of a working relationship but more importantly as a friend. He always had time for us. From everyone at JD Classics, our hearts go out to his family at this very sad time.”
