4.5m sterling worth of classics sold at Classic Motor Show sale

Silverstone Auctions ended the year with a bang achieving a total sales value of more than £4.5million and a sales rate of 81 per cent in its two-day sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show this weekend.

Roaring ahead to a believed world record price at auction was a 1994 Jaguar XJ220 that was once owned by the Royal Family of Brunei. With pre-sale interest from around the globe the car eventually sold for a premium inclusive £247,500 to a buyer from Singapore.

Astounding the crowds at the NEC was the sale of the ‘brand new’ 1980 Talbot Lotus Sunbeam. Determined bidding from buyers in the room, online and over the phone helped it sail past its estimate selling for an amazing premium inclusive total of £50,625.

Porsche prices show no sign of slowing down. An extremely rare 1994 Porsche 911 964 Turbo 3.6 sold for £220,500, nearly £90,000 over its lower estimate, while a 1992 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera RS Touring sold for £112,500, more than £30,000 over its lower estimate. With MKI Escorts proving in demand as ever, a 1973 Ford AVO Mk I Escort RS Mexico sold for £27,563, nearly £10,000 over its lower estimate.

In the heart of the UK’s automotive industry classics from local marque Land Rover clearly caught the attention of bidders. An immaculately presented 1951 Land Rover Series 1 80 ” sold for £38,250 and a 1994 last edition Range Rover LSE sold for £33,750, more than double its lower estimate.

Speaking after the sale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale said: “These are another great set of results for our vendors and are a fantastic way to end what has been a very exciting year for us.”

A number of historic motorcycles were also offered including one of the greatest bikes ever made, a 1989 Honda VFR 750 RC30, which sold for £23,625.

Nick added: “I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has attended one of our sales during the year and I look forward to welcoming you at our next auction which will be held at Race Retro in February."

Consignments are now being invited into the Race Retro & Classic Car sale which takes place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire on February 21st and 22nd.
