Matt Brabham's Long Beach cut short

Matt Brabham’s quest to win the Indy Lights Grand Prix of Long Beach has ended in disappointment with a technical failure cutting short his race.

Brabham made the best of the start, avoiding the opening lap incident involving two of the front-runners and started chipping his way forward.

He was able to get his No. 83 The Stellrecht Company-backed Andretti Autosport car up to sixth position early on.

The 21-year-old graduate of the Mazda Road to Indy program would only complete six laps however as the car stopped on circuit with a gearbox issue.

“Really disappointing is probably the only way I could sum up the weekend,” said Brabham.

“We started the race strong, avoided the opening lap crash and were on the charge.

“With some clear air and green running I am sure we could have closed on those in front of us.

“It was great that we were able to come to Long Beach and compete this weekend, I was so happy to be here, it is a wonderful event.

“I can’t thank Bob Stellrecht and The Stellrecht Company enough, along with the crew at Andretti Autosport for getting us on track this weekend.”

The race was won by Ed Jones. The next round of the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires is next weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, Alabama.
