Britain's Caygill Aiming For Strong Impact On Audi Sport TT Cup Debut

After a long and productive winter of preparation, West Yorkshire racing driver Josh Caygill is just days away from making his debut in the brand new Audi Sport TT Cup which begins next weekend, 2nd/3rd May, at Hockenheim in Germany.Embarking on only his third season in cars this year, the 25-year-old from Netherton will be the only British driver on the grid in the new one-make Audi series which takes over the slot left vacant by the Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup on the support package to the prestigious DTM touring car series.Having earned his place in the Audi championship through a special selection process, with a panel including professional racing drivers Markus Winkelhock and Marco Werner, Caygill is determined to make the most of the opportunity with a strong start in Germany. Before next weekend’s inaugural TT Cup races, the competitors will be on track at Hockenheim tomorrow, Saturday, 25th April, for an important pre-event test where Caygill – who is managed by successful international racer Tim Sugden – aims to get some solid mileage under his belt.“It’s been a long winter, we’ve had plenty of time to think about everything and now I can’t wait for the racing to start”, he commented, “I’ve been training hard, been on some track days with Tim [Sugden] and spent some time in the sim as well. Basically, we’ve been trying to get as well prepared as we can be and I’m happy with where we are.“Last year we obviously split ourselves between two championships, in the UK and Europe, so I’m looking forward to concentrating 100% on one championship this year. I can’t wait to be back behind the wheel of the Audi this weekend for the test, it’ll be important to get some good running in.”Already, Caygill has high expectations of the quality of racing and competition in the new category having been stunned by the pace and handling of the 310bhp TT Cup when he tested his new race car for the first time at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona last month.Reporting a hugely enjoyable outing, with performance of the like he hasn’t experienced before on four wheels, the former British Supersport motorcycle racer is relishing the prospect of being part of the high-profile new category.“I think there’s probably a bigger depth of talent in the TT Cup this year than there was in VW last year, it’s going to be a tough season with a lot of competition but that’s why we’re there – to learn and to improve against quality opposition”, he added, “I’m aiming to be as near to the sharp end as I can be, we’re not there to make up the numbers, and hopefully we can make a good start.”After this weekend’s test at Hockenheim, the competitors will benefit from an additional 50 minute practice session on Thursday, 30th April, ahead of qualifying on Friday, 1st May, at 09.35 (local time). Round one of the inaugural Audi Sport TT Cup will get underway at 10.10 (local time) on Saturday, 2nd May, with round two scheduled to follow on Sunday, 3rd May, at 09.40 (local time).
