British racer Josh Caygill produced his best drive of the Audi Sport TT Cup season during round four at the Norisring street circuit in Germany this morning, Sunday, 28th June, with a very well-deserved top five points scoring finish helping elevate him into the championship top 10.Beginning the weekend extremely well in qualifying, the Netherton driver posted the eighth fastest time – just 0.5 seconds shy of pole position – and although having to be satisfied with 12th in the points in the rain-lashed third round on Saturday, 27th June, he bounced back impressively today.“I’m made up with that result”, said Josh, who celebrated his 26th birthday last Monday, “To be fair, it’s the best result I’ve had since I started racing the [Volkswagen] Sciroccos a few years ago, I was disappointed with the first race after qualifying went so well but race two was great. It’s nice to feel you’ve achieved something after working your socks off like we have been.”Lining-up seventh on the grid for the warm and dry fourth round, the West Yorkshireman made a good start and was momentarily into the top six as he exited the hairpin but after being held out wide through the next sequence of turns Josh was edged back to 11th position.Gaining two places back on lap three at the hairpin, after contact ahead which resulted in the deployment of the Safety Car, when racing resumed on the eighth tour Josh set about trying to make more gains but initially slipped back to 10th after running slightly too deep into the hairpin.Hitting back with an excellent pass at the first turn the next time around to move into ninth once again, on lap 12 he was able to profit from another tangle just ahead which elevated him into seventh position. Following a second Safety Car period on lap 13, the re-start came on lap 16 and Josh climbed into the top six at the hairpin with a very clean pass up the inside on Loris Hezemans.Despite pressure from Hezemans during the closing stages, Josh maintained the place to the chequered flag on lap 25 to secure, by far, his best result of the campaign in his 2.0-litre, 310bhp Audi. In terms of championship points, the result was actually fifth rather than sixth with guest driver Jordi Gene – a former World Touring Car Championship front-runner – ineligible to score.Saturday’s race was contested in very wet conditions and from eighth on the grid, Josh was edged back to 12th place on the opening lap but had the clear pace to try and battle back up the order. In a great scrap with Levin Amweg, the Briton managed to move up into 11th on lap two but eventually had to settle for 13th position at the finish – 12th of the eligible points scorers.As a result of his strong weekend, Josh departs the Norisring inside the coveted series top 10 and just a single point shy of ninth place, only 10 points outside the top six. He, therefore, heads to the next event in Austria in August with boosted confidence.“In the first race I was third quickest in sector one and sector three, but I struggled with the middle sector and lost about 0.7 seconds per lap – that worked out at about 18 seconds over the whole race and I was only 21 seconds behind the winner at the end”, reflected Josh, “I tried to over-compensate too much and it didn’t work but race two was a big improvement.“I stayed out of trouble at the start but then someone had a big slide at the chicane, so into the last hairpin I’d dropped back a few places but I got on with it after that and came back through. I was sixth quickest in the middle sector, so that was much better.”He added: “My dad has been with us this weekend, along with my manager Tim [Sugden] and Jordan Pepper who is helping me out this year, and it’s nice to put a smile on their faces too!
