Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback confirmed for Private Treaty sale
2015 is proving to be a bumper year for Barons. Its sale at Sandown Park on July 28th is set to be the company’s biggest yet, both in terms of numbers of cars entered – more than 80 are expected – and in value of the lots on offer. The star lot, an exceptionally rare and original 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Mk 1 Volante Vantage, has been joined by an equally rare 1964 Bentley S3 Continental at the head of the extensive and diverse auction entry list.
In addition, following on from the success in April, when Barons had its highest-value sale to date and set a company record for an individual car when it achieved £739,000 for a 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback ‘barn find’ restoration project, the auction house has now been entrusted with a second example of this extremely rare model, for which bids are invited for a Private Treaty sale.

The 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Mk 1 Volante Vantage is extremely original. One of just 29 ever made, it is believed to be the final such Volante Vantage built. Chassis number DBVC-3738R has been in the same ownership since 1981, and is now used only rarely – and only in the dry. Described as being in ‘reasonable’ condition, it carries an estimate of £500,000-£750,000.
The supremely elegant 1964 Bentley S3 Continental features hand-built coachwork by James Young. Just 311 S3 Continentals were ever built – and only 20 of these were bodied by James Young. Finished in Tudor grey with Stone leather interior, it has covered less than 8000 miles in the past 41 years, though would appear to have been driven extensively in the first decade of its life, as the odometer shows a total of 113,000 miles. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a wonderful addition to a serious Bentley collection. Estimate: £100,000-£120,000.
Although Bentleys have been making the headlines for Barons recently, the company is particularly well known for its success with Jaguars, and there are some very fine ‘big cats’ prowling around this particular sale. These include a stunning 1968 Series 1.5 E-type 2+2 which has been the subject of a comprehensive nut-and-bolt bare metal restoration (£38,000-£42,000).
The sale also features the unique Offord-bodied 1934 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Coupe de Ville (£35,000-£50,000) and a rare 1968 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Convertible with bodywork by Mulliner Park Ward (£25,000-£45,000).
Across the sale, and across the price spectrum, there are some very fine motor cars. They include a near-concours 1964 Triumph TR4 (£20,000-£25,000), a delightful 1971 MG 1300 Mk2 which was a barn find in 2014, having been in storage since 1984 (£4,000-£6,000) and a rare, long wheelbase, 1994 Range Rover LSE Brooklands (£5,500-£7,500).
Other rarities include the 1929 Renault 6NN Torpedo (£9,000-£12,000) and the 1935 Crossley Regis 6 (£18,000-£22,000).
Private Treaty Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback
The vendor has owned this handsome 1954 machine, resplendent in its green paintwork, for over 40 years. The owner is part of a family with a large garage business, so not surprisingly the car has been well maintained. It has been used on special occasions, and runs well. With the previous R-Type Continental Fastback – which was a restoration project - achieving a remarkable £739,000 against an estimate of £200,000-£400,000, Barons is currently entertaining bids from would-be purchasers.
