This unique lot presented by Gooding & Company offers the winning bidder – in just a few years’ time – the Verizon IndyCar® Series chassis that won the 2014 Indianapolis 500®. What’s more, this chassis is still racing on the IndyCar circuit, and until it is retired, today’s purchaser will enjoy some of the perks of IndyCar ownership.
Designated the Dallara DW12, this chassis design, which was named for the late Dan Wheldon and introduced for the 2012 IndyCar season, provided IndyCar with a common monocoque that significantly upgraded driver safety. Each team entry in the Verizon IndyCar Series received the chassis in two slightly different configurations, one for oval speedway and one for road course specification.
Andretti Autosport® assigned chassis DW12-057 to Ryan Hunter-Reay, who has been in competition for Andretti since 2010 and has won at least one race in each of his seasons with the team. Hunter-Reay’s first outing with this car, wearing No. 28, was the 2012 Indianapolis 500, where he qualified 3rd but finished 27th after suspension issues knocked him out after 128 laps. Hunter-Reay’s luck turned around, and after three straight wins – at Milwaukee, Iowa, and Toronto – he was firmly back in the hunt for that season’s IndyCar championship. Taking the helm of this No. 28 car for the final race of the season at Fontana, California, Hunter-Reay went wheel-to-wheel with Takuma Sato for the final few thrilling laps and held on to finish 4th, allowing him to win the 2012 championship by just three points. At Indy in 2014, Hunter-Reay qualified 19th in this car. A late crash led to a red flag with eight laps to go, and after the green flag was waved, Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves traded the lead several times. Hunter-Reay made the final pass with two laps to go and eked out a .06-second win, the second-closest in Indy 500 history.
Andretti Autosport will continue to compete with this chassis through the end of its useful life, which is projected to be at the end of the 2018 race season. At that time, Andretti will restore and repair the car to its 2014 Indianapolis 500 aero kit and livery and will deliver it to the owner, within the continental US. This lot does not include the Honda race engine, as it is owned and retained by the manufacturer. The sale of this lot is unprecedented in modern motorsports. Andretti Autosport will provide the buyer with two season-long credentials and team hospitality passes granting gate, garage, and limited pit access for every Verizon IndyCar Series race through the 2018 season, including the Indianapolis 500. The package will also include four single-event guest credentials and team hospitality passes at each of the IndyCar races that Andretti Autosport competes in through 2018, except for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis and Indianapolis 500.
