Motor Racing Legends set to launch the season at Donington Historic Festival

Motor Racing Legends are all set to launch their season at Donington Historic Festival at the end of this month with packed grids and some stunning cars.

The Historic Touring Car Challenge has proved to be particularly popular at Donington, which will mark the first race of the new revised format grid, with 40 cars entered and a reserve list of half a dozen cars. The change of entry criteria for Group A, and the introduction of the Tony Dron Trophy for the Group 1 cars seem to have really hit their mark this year. Historic Touring Car fans can expect to see two 3.0 litre BMW CSLs who have taken advantage of the new entry criteria to run cars up to 1990 including ex-Touring car driver Nick Whale and his son Harry. They will be in strong competition against the JD Classic Ford 'Cologne' Capri of Chris Ward and ex-Touring car ace Steve Soper fresh from their Goodwood success.

The Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy, supported by EFG, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016, with plans to celebrate this milestone later in the year with a gathering of past and present competitors, friends and sponsors for a London based summer social event. At Donington you can expect to see some great battles throughout the grid. Last year’s winners Fred Wakeman and Patrick Blakeney-Edwards are back with the Cooper Jaguar T38, but they will have no less than three Jaguar D-types to contend with. There are a number of newcomers too – including Matthew Holme in an Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS Touring and Paul Ziller out in a Triumph TR2.The grid for the annual ‘Mad Jack’ race for Pre-War Sports Cars is also looking particularly strong. A pack of beefy Bentleys will be back, of course, along with current Pre-War Sports Car Trophy holder Rudi Friedrichs in his Alvis, no less than three Talbot Team Cars, and the mass ranks of the Frazer Nash ‘Chain Gang’ – including Anthony Galliers-Pratt who was co-driving with Patrick Blakeney-Edwards in the Kidston Trophy last year and had so much fun, he has acquired his own Frazer Nash TT rep. Amongst other highlights will be the chance to see Jonathan Turner’s Triumph Dolomite 8 (the British 8C Alfa) up against Martin Halusa’s Italian 8C Alfa Romeo.Donington Historic Festival marks the season opening for all the Motor Racing Legends race series including the Stirling Moss Trophy, supported once again this season by JD Classics, who have entered both a Jaguar D-type piloted by Derek Hood and Andrew Smith and Lister Costin piloted by Chris Ward. There is also a new face to welcome in Guillermo Fierro, who will be joining the series in his stunning Maserati T61 ‘Birdcage’. The grid features the traditional line-up of Listers, Lotus 15s and Cooper Monacos, as well as last year’s Trophy-winning Ferrari 246S in the hands of Nick Leventis and Bobby Verdon-Roe.
