Risi Competizione Rolex 24 12 Hour Report

At the 12-hour mark of the 55th Annual Rolex 24 At Daytona, the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari GTLM was in fourth position in class after six hours of heavy battles with the race-dominating Ford GTs and the improving Porsche 911s.The world-renowned 24-hour race in Daytona Beach, Florida, saw the Risi team complete the first six hours with good results and time in the lead in the ultra-competitive GT Le Mans (GTLM) class on several occasions. The next six hours showed some of the same battles and strong driving as the weather changed.Rain was a rather constant factor during hours six through 12. Qualifying driver Toni Vilander was in the car for approximately two and a half hours, during which time he saw two caution periods. At 10:45 p.m. EST Vilander relinquished the driving duties to James Calado, who aptly wheeled the 465-horsepower Ferrari for nearly two hours.Giancarlo Fisichella drove the next single stint for just over an hour and continued to battle against the elite Ford GTs and the gaining Porsche 911 GTs.A victory in this year's race is not going to be easy. Although the Risi Ferrari 488 GTLM has been fairly flawless and usually ranked in the top five in class through the first half of the twice-around-the-clock enduro, numerous cautions, traffic and unpredictable rain are all factors the competitors are facing.

Toni Vilander, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM:"When I got in the car it started raining. It was quite difficult. We didn't do any running on the rain [tires] prior to the race so we didn't know what to expect. But I must say I'm very pleased with the tires. This year we have a different kind of tires so I'm quite pleased with the way they were handling. Once we put the rain tires on I managed to improve the position. I think I went to the lead of the race. It was difficult but it was fun at the same time. We had some small things going on in the car so it was difficult to concentrate and do those things at the same time. We had an issue with visibility but it's fixed now for the other drivers. I thought the rain was going to be a disaster for us but it looks like we're quite okay so I'm happy with that. Now we just need to keep driving, driving, driving and see. Once we see some daylight then we will assess again where we are."

James Calado, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM:"It was a tough stint in general, I think. We were struggling with the grip in the rain. Even so, just trying to keep the car on the track and keep it out of trouble proved to be tough. It was probably some of the hardest conditions I've driven in, especially around here [Daytona]. The circuit is very low grip to start so I hope eventually it stops raining and we can get back to some good lap times. Giancarlo is in the car now and let's hope he can keep it on the track with these conditions and that we'll be in a good position for the end. Ford is quite a bit quicker than us. That was the maximum I could get out of the car without putting it into the wall so it will be tough to beat them on pace in the rain but if it dries out we've got a chance."Giancarlo Fisichella, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTLM:"It was just undrivable. The tire temperatures were 1.5, on the warning side. There was something wrong...maybe because the temperature dropped and there was lots more water than before, but the tire temperature was completely wrong. It's really difficult out there, so difficult."Tune-In Information:In the U.S. fans can watch the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Sunday, Jan. 29 on FOX Sports 2.
