In mid-1968, the flagship big-block Shelby Mustang received Ford’s new 428 cid “Cobra Jet” engine and the GT500KR was born. Though Ford quoted 335 hp, the figure was widely considered to be closer to 400 hp. Just over 500 examples were produced in 1968, making that year’s KR Convertible one of the rarest and most powerful open-top American muscle cars ever built.
According to copies of factory records, this GT500KR was originally finished in Lime-Gold paint and equipped with a C-6 automatic transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential. Other options included a power convertible top, power steering, power front disc brakes, GT equipment group, tilt-away steering column, and interior decor group.
Originally retailed by OZ Hall Motors of Birmingham, Alabama, this Shelby was first purchased by Elizabeth Payne. Invoices reflect that Ms. Payne returned to the dealership for servicing. Today, the Shelby continues to display marvelous originality, including red-oxide paint drippings on the floor panels and fender wells – an original production flaw often erased during restorations.
Currently displaying approximately 71,000 miles, this GT500KR was recently serviced and is accompanied by copies of factory records, maintenance invoices, and Marti report. The car is a wonderfully preserved example that beckons its next caretaker to enjoy energetic cruising or distinguished exhibition at regional concours and Shelby American events.
