1989 Ruf CTR coupe 'Yellow Bird' on offer at Artcurial Monaco Auction

“One of 28 genuine “Yellowbird” Ruf CTR’s – registered in 1989 and subsequently modified at the RUF factory for the owner so that it “was not just made for going in a straight line” – also enjoying benefit of further weight reduction down to 1188kgs.

Having driven a RUF CTR last year – can honestly say that these lightweight 930 turbo based cars are hilarious to drive and make the modern playstation generation turbos seem sanitised – love it!”

Chassis n° W09BT0349KPR06015 - Iconic model  - Same owner since 1992  - Large file of invoices  - One of 28 genuine RUF models

Certain Porsche models have developed legendary status, and the Ruf CTR is one of them. It was created by Alois Ruf, the German preparer from Pfaffenhausen, in response to the challenge launched by Road & Track to find the fastest car in the world. Derived from a production Carrera, the CTR 001 (for Group C Turbo Ruf) was lightened and modified, and equipped with a 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged Porsche engine that produced 469 bhp. An aerodynamic study resulted in relatively discreet changes to the body, and, liveried in bright yellow, it earned the nick-name " Yellow Bird ".

Following a showdown organised by the magazine, with twelve other cars, the Ruf CTR emerged victorious, with a top speed of 340 km/h. Later, it was recorded travelling at 342 km/h at Nardo ! In total, Ruf built 28 examples of this beast (in addition to the prototype), and also converted 25 Carrera 3.2 models to 469 bhp.

We are delighted to present one of the 28 genuine examples, that was bought new by an American banker who lived in London. It returned to Ruf fairly swiftly and was then sold to the present owner in 1992. We have the German registration document issued at this time that records the marque of the car as RUF, and the model as CTR, and that it was first road-registered on 5 September 1989. The car has a chassis number specific to RUF, a recognised manufacturer in Germany. The car was in its 'road-going' configuration, and the owner asked Ruf to prepare it further, as he wanted a car for track days, that " was not just made for going in a straight line ". An extensive file of invoices issued by Ruf in 1992 and 1995 documents the long list of modifications carried out and of particular interest, the extra weight reduction made and special equipment fitted. The weight of the car, when empty, was recorded as 1 188 kg.

Between 1993 and 1996, the car took part in events organised by Jürgen Alzen, and could be seen at Nürburgring, Monza, le Castellet, and Mugello...Regular servicing has been carried out by the Scuderia Alzen and preparation and development work by Ruf, all of which is recorded in the file of invoices. In 1998 and 2000, Porsche Berlin serviced the car. It is presented in immaculate condition today, with a mileage of just 41 130 km. Since the 2000s, with our driver getting older, the car has not been used a great deal. It has recently been serviced.

Not only does this RUF correspond to an iconic model offering exclusivity, rarity and ultra high performance, but it has also belonged to the same owner for most of its life, making it a totally exceptional car.
