MSA Championships Update

MSA British Drag Racing Championship
Round 5: FIA European Finals, Santa Pod Raceway, 8-10 September

Rain disrupted the combined FIA/MSA championship contest throughout the weekend and eventually washed out Sunday’s eliminations after the semi-final stage. Just two of the four scheduled qualifying sessions were completed.

Jimmy Ålund secured pole position, then set Low Elapsed Time of the event (5.932sec) in the opening round. MSA points leader Andy Robinson qualified second, then clocked the second sub-6sec ET of his career (5.999sec) defeating Mick Payne in the opener.

Peerless Michael Gullqvist took control, sealing his seventh FIA championship while advancing to the final with a trio of 5sec wins, beating Robinson in the second round. But for the rain-off, Gullqvist would have faced David Vegter in a Swedish-Dutch final.

Round 5: Bovington, 9-10 September

Martin Gould took his fourth win of the season after a very tough event at the MoD tank training facility in Bovington.

"It was a hard course on the cars so I'm very pleased to get the win, it puts us in a good position to retain our BCCC title," said Gould.

MSA British Car Trial Championship

Round 12: Gaby Mohr Car Trial, 10 September (Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club)

Rupert North borrowed a Citroen Saxo and drove superbly all day in challenging conditions to take a fabulous class and overall win at the Gaby Mohr trial.

North has faithfully campaigned his Rover Mini for 19 years, and jumped ship in a gutsy move to challenge Shawn Franklin who could only manage third in class. Trevor Moffatt challenged North all day but a poor fourth round dropped him behind. Philip Buckle took a big front wheel drive class win from Mark Hoppe who manged the last three hills with a broken CV joint salving the MSA Class award. Dave Oliver was once again sublime with another class win from Steve Courts.

North was ecstatic to finally take the British championship, only leading it after the last round. In a strange car he showed pure British champion class to take his third overall win of the year.
