This immaculate, award-winning 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Split Window Coupe is well known in the Corvette community as one of just 63 built with the optional N03 36-gallon fuel tank. Restored in body-off fashion to factory-new condition, it has been awarded Bloomington Gold Certification, as well as multiple NCRS honors, including Top Flight, Performance Verification and the highly coveted Duntov Mark of Excellence Award. One of 199 Z06 Corvettes built before Chevrolet halted production and withdrew its support from factory-backed Z06 racing teams, it was ordered new from Robert Chevrolet in Hicksville, New York, by Helen Matteson, who raced it in SCCA competition, and it was later owned by “Los Angeles Times” publisher and pioneering muscle-car collector Otis Chandler, who showed the car at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. The Z06 Special Performance Equipment package combined the Rochester fuel-injected L84 327/360 HP V-8, 4-speed manual transmission and Positraction rear end with racing-purposed brakes and suspension that included oversized finned drum brakes with internal stamped-steel cooling fans, ventilated backing plates with cooling scoops, sintered metallic linings and special dual-circuit master cylinder, special heavy-duty shocks and springs, and a 20-percent larger front sway bar. One of the rarest and most desirable Corvette options ever offered, the optional N03 “Big Tank” afforded drivers fewer pit stops on the race track. Adding to those features, Matteson also ordered power brakes, off-road exhaust, leather seats, power windows, AM/FM radio, 4.56:1 gear ratio and 6.70-15 blackwall tires. Finished in rare Saddle Tan with a matching tan interior, this Z06 “Tanker” is factory correct in virtually every detail. This very unusual color combination is rarely seen and radiates a sophisticated elegance that is much more civil than an “in-your-face” color like red or black. Its thoroughly documented ownership history includes title history, warranty book, owner's manual and sales-brochure correspondence with original-owner Helen Matteson, Bloomington Gold and NCRS certificates and judging sheets, and the NCRS/GM Shipping Data Report with a production date of February 21, 1963. As its high-caliber awards suggest, this 1963 “Big Tank” Z06 is prominent and highly regarded among collectors of significant Corvettes, and it has impressed under the most rigorous judging standards.
