Following the overwhelming racing success of the E30 M3, BMW were
always going to have difficulty improving the breed. Initially
offered as a 3.0 litre, the first E36 M3 that BTB Exhausts got
their hands under was that of marque specialists NCB Autokraft
who had entered a car for Guy Povey to race in Group N.
The rules for Group N meant that the racing system could be no
larger than that homologated for the road car. Of course BMW are
no strangers to the art of writing homologation papers to maximise
the possible performance of their cars. The system that BTB designed
featured an X pipe at the front and pipes that stepped up to a
twin 63.5 mm bore silencer at the rear. This system was immediately
successful in National races and has also been proven in countless
class victories at the notorious Nurburgring 24 hours. The principle
benefits of the stainless system are the massive 12 kilo weight
saving over the standard system. The straight through design of
the silencers gives a useful top end power boost, as well as emitting
the famous straight six howl. A road version of this system is
available featuring twin high flow Procats.
BTB were also involved with supplying silencers to the E36 318iS
touring cars that were successfully campaigned by Vic Lee Motorsport,
culminating in their championship win with Tim Harvey in 1992.
