Max became the youngest ever driver to race in the British Formula 3 Championship in 2007 when he competed at Donington on the day of his 16th birthday. He completed that season in F3 gaining valuable experience for his second season the next year.

In 2008 Max joined Hitech Racing who won the 2007 Championship, hoping for a more competitive season with the benefit of their experience and also having team mates to work with, as he explains;
“2007 with Arena was a great experience for me. It was difficult at times with having so much to learn. I didn’t know many of the circuits; I had never raced a single seater and didn’t have a team mate to help with set up or data so it was tough. I developed a lot with Hitech and I know there were advantages for me being with an experienced team and having a team mate.”

Max seized on the advantages straight away, setting the pace through much of the pre-season testing. When the Championship got underway, Max immediately showed ho far he had progressed, taking a fantastic 2nd place at the opening round of the series. He backed this up with pole position at Monza, leading much of the second race there and again taking pole at Rockingham where he went on to take his second podium of the year with a fine 3rd place in atrocious wet conditions. Through the middle part of the season the Hitech team got a little lost with set-up having introduced many new development parts. This certainly cost max in terms of results, but there was a reminder of his pace at the Masters of F3 event at Zolder. Up against the best drivers from all over Europe, Max qualified as the top British driver and took fastest lap in the race. The season ended with a return to the early season form and Max’s performances had caught the eye of several of the teams, making him a very desirable driver for the 2009 season.

The choice was taken to sign for the champions – Carlin Motorsport, who will switch engine suppliers for 2009, bringing the Volkswagen marque back to British F3. Max tried the new engine in winter testing in Spain and pronounced himself happy with engine and team and is looking forward to an even more successful season;

“2009 is an important year for me”, he said, “I’ve got to take everything I’ve learnt in the past two years and use it to try and win races. Of course I want to win the Championship, but the focus will be on each race and trying to get the best result possible. If I get the race wins and good results then the Championship will become a possibility.”
