2008

Now 17 years old and with a season of Formula 3 under his belt Max stepped up a gear for 2008. Joining the Championship winning Hitech team, he was one of the pacesetters during winter testing and backed up his promise of strong performances with a fantastic drive to 2nd place in the season’s opening race at Oulton Park. Max had become the youngest ever driver to stand on the podium in British F3 and went on to claim another record two rounds later when he grabbed pole position at Monza, again the youngest ever driver to do so. At the next round at Rockingham Max made the podium again after a mature drive in atrocious wet conditions saw him take 3rd place.

The early season promise faded away during the middle part of the year as new development parts introduced by Hitech failed to deliver and sent the team, and Max, down a confused path. A strong showing however at the Masters of F3 event at Zolder in Belgium, signalled the beginning of a recovery. Max qualified as the top British driver and also claimed fastest lap in the race. The Masters heralded a return to form and Max finished the season strongly, hardly ever outside the top ten. His haul of points for the year put him 10th overall in the Championship and earned him an invite to the prestigious end-of-season event in Macau. This annual street race is fought out by the world’s top young drivers and Max acquitted himself well. He finished the challenging race in 14th place, but had been one of the top six fastest drivers in a couple of the practice and qualifying sessions.

Overall, this year had clearly demonstrated the progress Max had made and marked him out as a potential winner for 2009.
