GEMsport heads to Kielder

for Pirelli Rally

The notoriously tough Kielder Forest is on the agenda this weekend for rising rally team GEMsport as its two Fiesta teams head north for the Pirelli Rally.

Rising Welsh drivers Elfyn Evans and Meilyr Evans are gearing up for a hectic weekend as the Pirelli National Rally in Carlisle hosts the second round of the Fiesta SportingTrophy.

“They will be facing more than 50 miles of testing stages in the Kielder Forest complex in just five hours of competition so they will have to be on the pace from the very first mile,’’ said team boss Gwyndaf Evans who runs the Dolgellau-based outfit.

“In the first round both drivers showed tremendous pace and this is an extremely important rally for the whole team,’’ he said.

The team’s professional and ambitious approach to rallying is making a major impact on the sport this year as GEMsport contests the Fiesta SportingTrophy in both the UK for gravel experience and Ireland for asphalt experience.

Elfyn, co-driven by Gareth Roberts has won both of the Irish rounds in 2008 to date and is keen to make his mark on the gravel championship having finished third overall last year.

“On the last round we set three fastest times and won the hard charger award but driveshaft problems meant we couldn’t bid for victory so I really want to get a good result this weekend,’’ said Eflyn

For Meilyr this will be his first competitive visit to Kielder and he too is keen to shine in the Fiesta.

“This year is a real learning curve but myself and co-driver Andrew Edwards are well prepared for the task in hand and are confident for our prospects this weekend.’’

Action gets underway at noon on Saturday April 19 with the finish scheduled for Carlisle City Centre at 5pm.
