GEMsport success in Killarney

as rally team records best ever weekend

GEMsport, one of the country’s rising rally teams is celebrating its best event to date with both drivers on the podium on the Killarney Rally in Ireland.

19 year old Elfyn Evans finished second overall and consolidates his position as championship leader in the Fiesta SportingTrophy Ireland while team mate 18 year old Meilyr was an impressive third overall.

“This was an amazing event for the whole team,’’ said GEMsport boss Gwyndaf Evans. “Meilyr and Elfyn both set quickest times during the day and were seriously impressive in the hustings.com Fiestas.’’

Elfyn, who won the first two rounds of the championship narrowly missed a hat trick of victories after being held up on one of the tricky stages by another competitor but said points were the priority at the weekend and second place reinforces his overall championship lead.

“This was a totally new event for me so it was good to be on the pace and the car never missed a beat,’’ said Elfyn who was co-driven by Gareth Roberts.

There were also celebrations for team mate Meilyr and co-driver Andrew Edwards after recording their first podium finish of the season. The pair were fastest on the very first stage of the day and maintained an impressive pace throughout the rally to finish third overall.

“That was an incredible weekend,’’ said Meilyr who is in his first full year of the Fiesta Championships in the UK and Ireland. “Everything worked well and I felt comfortable with the pace all day.’’

The team is now back onto the gravel later this month for an outing on the Severn Valley Rally in Builth Wells – a relatively local event for the mid-Wales team. And they are back in action in Ireland next month for the Donegal Rally.
