GEMsport aims for podium on Welsh event

The classic Welsh stages of the Severn Valley are on the agenda for rising rally team GEMsport this weekend (May 31) as team drivers Elfyn Evans and Meilyr Evans contest what is effectively their home event.

Based in Dolgellau, the hustings.com team was launched earlier this year by Welsh legend and former British Rally Champion Gwyndaf Evans to build a team with participation in the World Rally Championship the long term goal.

The team has quickly become one of the most important for rising young drivers with success in the FiestaSporting Trophy championships in Ireland and the UK.

And this weekend the crews will tackle 45 high speed miles of classic Welsh forests including Radnor, Crychan and Halfway.

The Severn Valley Clubmans Rally marks the half way point of the Fiesta SportingTrophy and hopes are high that both of the team’s rising stars will be on the podium.

“The whole team is really looking forward to rallying in Wales and with plenty of local support we hope the hustings.com Fiestas will be setting the pace,’’ said team boss Gwyndaf Evans.

“Both Elfyn and Meilyr have shown great speed and determination this season both on the gravel and the asphalt and we really want to capitalise on this with success at the Severn Valley.’’

Elfyn currently lies third overall in the championship and a second place on the last round, the Pirelli in Carlisle, has put the 19 year old in a buoyant mood ahead of this weekend’s test.

“We have a great team preparing the cars ahead of competition and competing in Wales for the first time this season will give us the chance to shine on some great forest roads,’’ said Elfyn.

Action gets underway on Saturday morning before the finish back at the Builth Wells Showground on Saturday afternoon.
