classic cars head to Rockingham

RACING enthusiasts will be heading for Rockingham this weekend (June 7/8) as the Northamptonshire circuit plays host to the Classic & Sports Car Club.

The Classic & Sports Car Club was set up in 2001 by enthusiast racers and has grown to more than 600 members and runs ten race weekends each year. Each race features classic cars from yesteryear.

Providing the entertainment at Rockingham this weekend will be sports saloons and GT cars from the 1960s, '70s and '80s competing for top honours. As well as action from the Club’s three racing series - Swinging 60s, Tin Tops and Future Classics - the Formula Junior Historic Racing Association will be celebrating its jubilee year.

There will be plenty of opportunity to get close to the action with an open paddock and free grandstand seats for everyone, while children aged 15 and under get in free.

Adult race day admission costs £12 or weekend passes are only £15 when booked in advance. Tickets will also be available on the gate at £15 and £21 respectively. Advance bookings can be made at www.rockingham.co.uk or via the ticket hotline on 0871 231 0846. Fans that came to the last meeting can get in for just £10 on the day with their F3/GT ticket.

Team Rockingham will also be in action this weekend at Mondello Park in Ireland as the 2008 Pickup Truck Championship makes the trip across the Irish Sea to County Kildaire. Antony Hawkins in his #98 special Rockingham liveried truck currently lies in ninth place overall after three rounds of the ten meeting series on 930 points.

Double champion Gavin Seager leads the championship on 1175 points, with Richard Grindrod on 1110 and Phil White on 1107 leading the chasing pack in second and third place respectively. After a mechanical problem with the differential at the last Rockingham round, Antony will be hoping to improve on his 11th and 10th finishes to move up the championship table.

Antony said: “We are looking forward to racing at Mondello with a repaired diff, which will hopefully enable us to challenge the leaders.”

Antony is sponsored by Rockingham as part of the circuit’s continued support of both local drivers and the pickup truck racing series. As part of the package Antony will receive vital track time and will promote driving days at Rockingham, where drivers can get behind the wheel of a range of authentic racing cars.
