Law and Donohue Earn 2nd Place Finish in Rough and Tumble Sahlen’s Six Hour Grand-Am Enduro
With temperatures soaring into the upper 90’s, the weather was as hot as the intense race action that marked the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve Cask No 16 Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International Raceway in picturesque upstate New York. Darren Law of Phoenix, Arizona and David Donohue of Malvern, Pennsylvania steered clear of the problems that brought out 9 separate full course caution periods for a total of 27 laps, and took the checkered flag in the #58 Brumos Porsche Riley in second place. The duo’s podium finish at Watkins matches their best finish in Grand-Am Daytona Prototype competition that they scored late in 07 at Infineon Raceway.
The strong podium finish for the #58 adds proof to the fact that the team’s Porsche Riley combination is a competitive package, and was a good reward for a team that has worked hard to produce a consistently front running operation.
Weather played a role during much of the weekend’s activities. With rain showers intermittently soaking the 3.4 mile "Long" format of the historic Watkins Glen circuit, practice time was at a premium, and Law and Donohue worked hard with the Brumos team to get a good qualifying and race set up under the #58. Donohue turned in a 1:43.750 lap in qualifying to place the Brumos Porsche 4th on the grid. Donohue’s qualifying efforts have placed the Brumos in the top five on the grid for each race this year.
Law and Donohue decided to split the driving duties for the 6-hour extended format race in two sets of stints each. Law and Donohue ran near the front of the pack for the entire event, leading 59 of the 179 total laps. Driver changes were done strategically during full course yellow caution periods. Law piloted the #58 Brumos from lap 38 to 69 and then from lap 115 to lap 179, taking the checkered in 2nd. Law led 35 of the 100 laps that he drove for the afternoon.
The ability to endure heat is always a consideration for a top flight race driver, and the Sahlen’s 6-Hour was a perfect example. Considering the warm temperatures outside the car and the searing temperatures inside, Law was happy that he has maintained a rigorous fitness schedule, and feels that he and Donohue’s level of physical conditioning played a role in the team’s success over the weekend.
Darren Law Quote
"Finishing on the podium like this is terrific, and I feel vindicated in a way. We’ve known for a long time that the Brumos package is fast, and we’ve shown that speed almost all year. We’ve just run into some rotten luck at a couple of the events, and it was good to see things go our way a bit here. David and I both drove as hard as we could, and the Porsche Riley never skipped a beat. It was very hot out there, and even though we both work out quite a bit, I gotta tell you that I’m whooped a bit! The cool suit and equipment that CDOC helps me with was invaluable today. It was a great weekend, and I’m really happy for the whole Brumos crew, they’ve earned it. One more step up that podium!"
Darren’s race schedule is starting to get busy and his next event will be June 20-22 for the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio where he and David Donohue will again tackle the Grand-Am competition in their #58 Brumos Daytona Prototype. Soon after that, on July 3rd, Darren will be in the #58 again for the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway.
