John Allison, winner of the 2007 VXR Racing Driver of the Year competition, secured a fifth and fourth place in yesterday's rounds of the 2008 Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup at his home circuit of Croft, North Yorkshire.
John, who has enjoyed success as a professional racing driver since winning a fully-paid for race seat in a nationwide competition last year, had a solid third race weekend. "We didn't get much testing in free practice on Friday as it was raining heavily; both half-hour sessions were extremely wet and we lost valid track time."
"The difficult conditions from Friday didn't help Saturday's qualifying and I was a little off the pace in the two qualifying sessions, but I still managed to set the fifth fastest time for the first race and sixth quickest for race two," the 35-year-old mortgage consultant added.
Glorious sunshine was the order of race day on Sunday and John was determined to improve from his grid position. Following a great start in race one, John had a race-long battle, fighting his rivals off to take home a fifth place. "I had a great first race; I knew the Astra VXR was faster than the BMW and I kept a cool head, my foot down and finished in fifth ahead of him," said John.
The second race of the day saw an improvement for the VXR-supported driver. Starting from sixth, John's fastest lap time was only a fraction off the overall fastest lap time. He gained time massively throughout the race and after attacks from a SEAT, John was able to pull away to finish in a credible fourth place.
"This weekend I found the perfect set-up for the dry; the Astra VXR is now exactly the way I need it to be," said John. "I'm now fully confident we can secure more great results this year and I'm sure my first win is not too far away."
John's next race will be on 20 July at Castle Combe where he will target the first race win of his new-found career.
