Fisichella Motorsport weekend summary

Fisichella Motor Sport International’s latest stop was at the Hungaroring, near Budapest in Hungary, for rounds of the GP2 Series and Formula BMW Europe. After Monaco, the technical Hungarian track has the lowest average speed of the season and features many tight and twisty corners. Roldan Rodriguez and Marko Asmer were in action for the GP2 team, with Pedro Bianchini, Mihai Marinescu and Ollie Millroy undertaking driving duties for the Formula BMW Europe team.

It was a disappointing weekend for the GP2 team, with FMSI coming away from the weekend having not scored any points. Roldan and Marko qualified for Saturday’s feature race in 20th and 24th positions respectively and crossed the line after 42 laps with Marko in 18th position and Roldan in 19th. For Sunday’s shorter 28-lap race, Marko began 16th with Roldan on the row behind in 17th. Hydraulic problems caused Marko to retire from the race, while a problem with the anti-roll bar ended in retirement for Roldan.

In Formula BMW Europe, Mihai, Ollie and Pedro qualified for Saturday’s race in 15th, 18th and 22nd positions respectively. Pedro finished the race in 16th position, improving six positions from his starting spot, but Mihai and Ollie unfortunately retired after being put out of the race by another driver hitting them. For Sunday’s race, Ollie qualified in 14th with Mihai behind him in 16th and Pedro on the 12th row in 23rd position. Pedro finished in 16th position for the second time of the weekend, with Ollie crossing the line in 22nd. Mihai suffered his second retirement, once again after being hit by a competitor, causing the end to his race. Ollie was also hit and was forced to complete the race with a damaged rear wing and severe understeer. The championship standings are extremely tight, with teams set for an exciting battle as the season begins to come to a conclusion. FMSI are now in fifth position with 207 points, just three points behind fourth placed Double R Racing and four further points behind third placed Eurointernational.

The next challenge for FMSI will be rounds 14 and 15 of the GP2 Series and 11 and 12 of Formula BMW Europe at the brand new Valencia street circuit in Spain on 23 and 24 August.

Paolo Coloni, Team Principal:

GP2: “It’s not been an easy weekend, but we’ve also been very unlucky. It is good that we have finally found the problem with Roldan’s car, and Marko is improving and getting used to the car, so we are looking forward to the next race.”

Formula BMW: “Our weekend was compromised by our qualifying performance. Obviously there was something in qualifying that we didn’t quite understand, but we did find out what it was. Unfortunately the races are short so it is difficult when you start at the back. I am sure we will be back on track in Valencia and will be competitive and at the right end of the grid again.”
