Darren Law New Jersey Grand-Am recap

After struggling to find a good race set up for their #58 Brumos Riley Porsche Daytona Prototype, endurance racing standouts Darren Law of Phoenix, Arizona and his teammate David Donohue of Malvern, Pennsylvania, finished 10th in Sunday’s Supercar Life 250 at the new Thunderbolt Raceway at the New Jersey Motorsports Park.

The New Jersey event marked the penultimate race of the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No 16 season, with the finale scheduled to take place mid September at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. Law and Donohue, who had enjoyed a strong run of top five finishes mid season, continue to sit 3rd in the driver’s championship points standings with a narrow one point lead over the #59 Brumos sister car of J.C. France and Joao Barbosa.

Law and Donohue were uncharacteristically off the pace at the New Jersey circuit, although Donohue, who has three pole positions to his credit this year, was able to place the #58 8th in qualifying with a lap of 1:12.289 of the 2.25 mile road course circuit.

After a stint which saw Donohue lead the sixteen car Daytona Prototype field from lap 21 to lap 57, the Brumos Porsche driver pitted under a fortunate full course caution that played to the team’s strategy. As Donohue approached the #58 team pit stall he ran into the problem that many drivers during the race experienced where pick up, or used tire rubber, built up on the cooling slick tires as he entered pit lane after slowing. The pick up on the tires reduced grip to the point where Donohue could not slow the car adequately, and it lightly contacted pit wall as he came to a stop. The Brumos crew was quick reacting though, and the team was able to complete the stop for a new set of Pirelli slicks, a tank of Sunoco fuel, and a driver change to Law.

Darren exited the pits in eighth, and set out to make up some of the lost ground. The set up on the #58, which the team decided to change the night before the race, was not ideal, and he worked hard to maintain a competitive position with the Brumos Porsche. For much of his stint, Law was able to keep in touch with the lead pack of cars, and the race, which ended based on the scheduled time of 2 hours and 45 minutes saw Law take the checkered in 10th place.

Darren Law Quote

"That was a tough weekend overall. We had a decent first session, but I think we were just a bit off with the set up. We decided to change the car the night before the race and it did improve the handling. David had a great stint, but things went down hill a bit. It is still another top ten though, and we are still 3rd in the championship standings. We’ll take it to Miller and see how things turn out. It’ll be our last shot at a win for the season, and David and I will working hard to try and get it."
