DAMS Formula BMW Grande Finale

This weekend DAMS competed in the 2 races counting for the BMW Europe Championship during the Italian F1 Grand Prix meeting on the Monza circuit. It was the “grande finale” of the season. Kevin Breysse and Jim Pla did their utmost to get the best out of the quickest circuit on the calendar in very treacherous conditions due to the rain. Backing them up this weekend was young Swiss driver, Joel Volluz.

After qualifying in the wet Kevin started from 11th place on the grid, as he was unable to take advantage of slipstreaming. He thought he could fight his way up through the field by pushing hard. Unfortunately, he crashed out. Jim started from 11th spot and came home 10th because of spinning.

Today, Kevin was 7th on the grid on a wet track. By trying to limit wheelspin at the start he stalled, and rejoined the race at the back of the field. He then showed his speed and picked off his rivals one by one. He looked on target for a good result until he was knocked off by another car ending his race. He was 9th. Jim had better luck. He set off from 11th and overtook several cars to finish in an excellent 4th place.

Joel Volluz’ 2 races ended in retirement and 11th place.

Kevin finished the 2008 championship in 8th place while Jim came home 17th. DAMS ended the year in 6th position in the teams’ ratings.

Eric Boullier, team manager: “Bravo to our drivers for this season during which, I’m sure, they’ve learned a lot. They now have much more experience that they can capitalise on in whatever branch of the sport in which they continue their career. Congratulations to the whole team for its impeccable preparation of the cars throughout the year.”

Kevin Breysse: “My season’s ended on a couple of frustrating results, but the conditions were really tricky this weekend. I’m happy with my performance today as I was among the quickest and that’s encouraging for the next stage of my career.”

Jim Pla: “At Spa last weekend I changed my approach to racing and it’s paid off. I came to Monza in the same state of mind. I’m happy with my result. I think I’ve improved throughout the championship, and I’m now ready to go head-to-head with the best in the category.”
