Motors TV Weekly Highlights

11th - 17th October

Aussie Supercar Spectacular - LIVEGrab your esky and fill it full of tinnies because the daddy of all touring car races returns to Motors TV this weekend in the form of the Bathurst 1000, Australia’s answer to Le Mans. The 52nd running of “The Great Race” takes place around the fearsome Mount Panorama course, the event’s permanent home since 1963, where drivers will complete over 160 laps during the 1000km spectacle. Ford duo Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup are bidding for a third straight victory behind the wheel of their Falcon as they look to emulate antipodean greats Peter Brock, Larry Perkins and Jim Richards as the only men to have scored a hat-trick of consecutive wins.

Take the planet’s most glamorous supercars, somehow make them even more glamorous and what do you get? The FIA GT championship, of course.  This season’s entry list reads like a who’s who in the world of high-performance trinketry; Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Corvette, Porsche. They are all here, only sporting huge spoilers, diffusers and an engine note to wake the dead. The ninth round of the championship comes live from Zolder where Karl Wendlinger and his DBR9 will be looking to repeat their success from last year.

 AMA-zing

Ever wondered what happened to former British World Superbike champion Neil Hodgson? Well it turns out after enduring mixed results in MotoGP he upped sticks and relocated to America to chance his arm in their most prestigious of two-wheeled competitions, the AMA series. It’s the standard Superbike affair really which means the already rapid road-going machines are slimmed down on a diet of carbon fibre and racing paraphernalia to create something that, in the end, is just a bit quicker. Still, there’s no denying its credentials as a proving ground of legends. The AMA can count greats such as Wayne Rainey, Troy Corser and Nicky Hayden amongst its former champions. Action comes from round 19 at Laguna Seca.

European Truck Racing

Where have all the French racing drivers gone? Once upon a time Alain Prost ruled the racetracks of the world but since his retirement in 1993, only twice has La Marseillaise been heard on the podium of a grand prix. Sure, Sebastien Loeb has swept all before him in the WRC, but he, along with Sebastien Bourdais, remain the exceptions that prove the rule. After much searching however it seems that the Gaelic racer is indeed alive and well, residing in the European Truck Racing series no less, where a third of the field hail from France. Action from the latest round of the championship comes from Jarama in Spain where once again the 1000bhp load lugger’s and their crews will be busy defying the laws of physics and common sense.

 Superbike School: UK

The show that makes superbike stars of the general public returns for episode four of the six-part series. This week, Derek and Sheela are learning to change lines like Valentino Rossi whilst Andy shows Al what his knees are for. There’s also a chance to see the School’s Brake Rig in action before finding out what makes a Superbike School coach.

Bugjam Vancake

Granted, from the title alone this really could be about anything. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that a toddler had been commissioned to throw his magnetic letters at the fridge door to come up with it. It’s no typo though because almost unbelievably, Bugjam Vancake does exactly what it says on the tin. Following the exploits of Andy Saunders and his team, the programme charts the creation of the world’s flattest camper van (pancake, get it?) during the annual three-day VW/dance music amalgamated festival that is Bugjam. Over 4ft of classic camper was lopped off the top of a 1980’s Volkswagen to make the world record-breaking vehicle which now resembles something you’d find pulling aeroplanes around at the airport.
