GEMsport set to rack up the miles

in championship bids

Welsh rally team GEMsport is set to clock up more than 2,000 miles next weekend – and that’s before any of the team members drive in competition.

Team boss Gwyndaf Evans said the Dolgellau-based team is facing huge logistical challenges as it bids for success in the Fiesta SportingTrophy in Ireland and the UK – and he competes in the British Rally Championship for the Mitsubishi works team.

The rallying efforts get underway on Wednesday September 24 when Elfyn Evans and Gareth Roberts together with team mates Meilyr Evans and Andrew Edwards set off to recce the stages for weekend’s Cork 20 Rally.

The teams then head to Perth in Scotland to compete in the McRae Stages on the Saturday before heading back to Ireland where the teams will compete in Cork on the Sunday in the hustings.com Fiesta.

Meanwhile Gwyndaf has been drafted back into the works Mitsubishi team for the Rally Yorkshire on Saturday before he dashes over to Ireland to oversee the final round of the Fiesta SportingTrophy.

And all events are hugely important for the team as Elfyn currently leads the Fiestas in both the UK and Ireland.

Cork is the final round in Ireland for the hustings.com team and hopes are high of clinching the title after a dominant run by the 19 year old this year who has won three of the asphalt rounds.

And the team is planning to consolidate its UK lead on the McRae Stages before the final gravel round next month with Meilyr focusing on improving his championship position as the series enters its final phases.

“2008 has been an immense year for us so far with Elfyn leading both championships,’’ said Gwyndaf.

“But it has taken an enormous amount of planning to ensure the teams, cars and support crew can be at both of these events while I take on Mitsubishi duties in the British Rally Championship,’’ said Gwyndaf.

In addition to the 2,000 miles between event locations the crews will be tackling 44 high speed stage miles on the McRae Stages, more than 160 miles on the Cork 20 and 95 stage miles on Rally Yorkshire.
