300 historic racing cars head for Donny

Over 300 historic racing cars will head to Donington Park over the weekend of 4/5 October for the Donington Collection Meeting, the final major historic motor racing festival of the season in Britain.

Featured in the 15-race weekend, organised by the Historic Sports Car Club, will be a wonderful array of classic racing cars, sports cars and single-seaters from the 1950s through to the 1980s and with adult admission just £12 per day and children admitted free, either Saturday or Sunday will make a great value day out for all the family.

Nearly two decades after it won the Wheatcroft Gold Cup in the hands of Jochen Mass and Jean-Louis Schlesser, the 'Silver Arrows' Sauber Mercedes C9 will return to Donington Park to race in the final Group C races of the season.

Having been damaged in a first corner accident at Silverstone in July, Xtec Engineering in Walsall has been busy repairing the car for its Australian owner Rob Sherrard. "It's been completely stripped and rebuilt," said Paul Knapton of Xtec. "We've had help from Sauber for some of the parts and they have loaned us parts to copy as well."

Sherrard will share it with fellow Australian Wayne Park in the 90-minute two-driver race at Donington. In 1989, Mass and Schlesser headed a Mercedes one-two in the 480km World Sportscar Championship race at the Leicestershire track.

Local ace Simon Hadfield will race one of no less than 14 Formula 5000s entered in the Derek Bell Trophy. Hadfield's team will field four Lolas in the DBT race, with other cars for Michael Schryver, Stuart Tilley and journalist Marcus Pye. Ranged against the Hadfield squad will be father and son team Frank and Mick Lyons, Mark Dwyer and Neil Glover, as well as very rapid F2 cars for Sean Walker, Richard Evans and John Crowson as well as the F1 Tyrrell 006 of Ryan Delane.

Not only will full grids produce some great racing, the paddock will be packed with a glorious array of racing machinery and visitors to Donington will have ample chance to get up close to the cars and drivers in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
