Motors TV Weekly Highlights

27th December – 2nd January

 V8 Supercar Review

Yes, after weeks of waiting for the climax of the Thunder Down Under, Motors TV can finally bring you the obligatory V8 Supercar season review. The generous portioning of points doled out across the year tends to keep Australia’s premier title fight open right to the last and thankfully, for the sake of watching this two-part, four hour homage to hopped-up family saloons, 2008 was no exception. Jamie Whincup ultimately came out on top after a thrilling three-way title scrap with Mark Winterbottom and Garth Tander to take his maiden championship.

Following hot on the heels of the Supercar review this week comes an FIM Supermoto World Championship recap. If you’re new to all this then sit back, relax and witness the most amazing motorcycling hybrid yet seen. Much like Rallycross, the course is split into sections of smooth tarmac and loose gravel, only with ridiculous jumps thrown in for that little extra something. It’s quite a spectacle really and what better way to prepare for a new season of Supermotoing than with this hugely entertaining 2008 review show.

Lotus 60th Anniversary At last, an alternative to the overhyped, overpriced, drink induced shenanigans of the perennially anticipated but ultimately disappointing New Year’s Eve party; Lotus at 60. Avoid Britain at its booziest by settling down in front of the ‘box for this little gem of a misty eyed memoir. There’s archive footage aplenty to be enjoyed in this hour-long tribute to one of the greatest Marques to grace motorsport during the last 60 years. The perfect excuse to finish off the Christmas nibbles.

Asia-Pacific Rally ChampionshipCoverage of the final two rounds in the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship come from Malaysia and China where the obviously Australian Cody Crocker wrapped up the 2008 title.  Asia-Pacific Rally ChampionshipSaturday, 27th December, 15:00

 Australasian Safari

The stunning backdrop of Western Australia’s Outback again plays host to the 2008 Australasian Safari. Minus the militants, this Paris-Dakar Down Under is amongst the most spectacular enduro-rallies in world motorsport where competitors traverse outback roads and tracks via a nine day marathon that takes in a great variety of geographical challenges and represents a stiff test of both man and machine. The usual array of bikes and 'Utes will be taking on the route which travels across deep desert sands and great salt beds.

TransAfrican Classic

Having started in 2006, you can’t help but feel it’s a tad optimistic to label the Paris-Dakar’s spiritual successor a Classic just yet. Even so, the TransAfrican adventure does make room for a selection of vintage 4x4s and, oddly, 2CVs which share the stage with a swathe of modern Chelsea Tractors. This is no place for vehicle one-upmanship though as each competitor faces the same gruelling challenge of navigating along the unforgiving spine of central Africa.
