Australian Daniel Ricciardo will leave his name in the history books as the first winner of the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup after a season that was full of unexpected twists. It only took a year for the Formula Renault 2.0 WEC to become an integral part of the European motor sporting landscape.

2009 will see the championship consolidating its position thanks to a varied and attractive calendar. It will kick off on the Nogaro circuit in France during the launch of the FFSA Super Series at the traditional Easter Cups meeting. After that comes Barcelona where the first round of the World Series by Renault Championship will be held. A month later, the Formula Renault 2.0 WEC will share the streets of the mythic Pau circuit with the WTCC. It’s the championship’s first city race and all the teams and drivers are looking forward to it - an event not to be missed!

Then it will be part of the FFSA Super Series on the Magny-Cours layout before the summer break. The 2.0 WEC will be back in action in Spain on the Valencia circuit, after which it will head for the famous Dijon-Prenois track as part of the DTM/ F3 Euroseries meeting. The final will be held on the new Algarve circuit in Portimao.

The FFSA French Formula Renault 2.0 Championship is included in the series and the rounds counting for the French title are: Nogaro, Barcelona, Pau, Magny-Cours and Dijon.

The Formula Renault 2.0 West European and French Championships are proven launching pads to the upper formulas. The winners will be given a test in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series at the end of the year.

The 2009 field combines both quality and quantity, as was the case last year. The French team SG Formula is back to defend its title, which the Spaniards from the Epsilon Euskadi squad will be out to win in 2009. They will be up against tough opposition from Epsilon Sport, Pole Services and Fortec Motorsport all determined to give the favourites a run for their money.

The Sunred team looked after by former F1 driver Emilio de Villota will make its debut this year. Other top-line European squads are also considering entering the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup. All the teams are currently finalising their driver line-ups for the coming season, and the first collective test session on the Barcelona circuit in February will give a better idea of their relative strengths.
