UK Rolex 24 European Drivers Challenge

European drivers to compete for historic opportunity to race at the 2010 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Some of the brightest motor racing stars from the UK and across Europe have been presented with a unique opportunity to compete in next year’s world-famous Rolex 24 At Daytona race, it has been announced.

The annual Rolex 24 At Daytona is one of the toughest and most demanding driving challenges in the world and a highlight of the international motor sports calendar.

A wide array of stars from NASCAR and IndyCar will once again compete in the big race this weekend, including a number of Britain’s leading drivers such as Dario Franchitti, Alex Lloyd and Dan Wheldon.

Now, racers across some of Europe’s major racing series have a unique chance to land a spot in a Daytona Prototype for the 2010 Rolex 24 At Daytona, through a special season-long Driver Challenge programme.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona Driver Challenge presented by Sunoco is a competition between racers in high-calibre Sunoco-fuelled championships in Europe, such as the British GT Championship and the British F3 International series. The highest point scorer will win a race seat in a Daytona Prototype and a once in a lifetime opportunity to race the world-famous high banks of the Daytona track against America’s finest.

The points system will include 100 points for a victory, 80 points for second, 75 for third, down through to 15th position. In addition, 25 points will be awarded to both the driver who wins pole and the driver with the fastest race lap.

At the end of the season, the driver who accumulates the most points will be awarded the prestigious Daytona driving seat, along with flights and accommodation for the race in Florida.

“We feel that this unique Driver Challenge will increase popular awareness of the Rolex 24 At Daytona in Europe by offering one of the biggest and most unique prizes ever offered to European racers,” said Robin Braig, President of Daytona International Speedway. “The Rolex 24 At Daytona is one of the most prestigious sports car races in the world, and this new driver challenge will continue to grow its international popularity.”

Competing in this year’s 2009 Rolex 24 At Daytona will be racing stars including former F1 star Pablo Montoya, Italy’s Max Angelelli and legendary five-time champion Hurley Haywood.

As well as being one of the most-watched sporting events in the US sporting calendar, Rolex 24 is now drawing record numbers of fans from around the world, from established motor sports enthusiasts to those with a new interest in the sport.

And next year, Britain may have a new star to keep an eye out for on the high banks of Daytona.
