Hillspeed Expanding Formula Renault UK

ASSAULT TO THREE CARSFormula Renault UK Championship team Hillspeed has announced its intention to expand its 2009 assault to three cars, having already confirmed Menasheh Idafar and Michael Lyons ahead of the new season which begins on 4th/5th April at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent.

With a trio of drivers in place for its 2009 Formula Renault BARC Championship campaign, namely potential title contender Ahmad Al Harthy, reigning Winter Champion James Theodore and squad newcomer Ellis Harkins, the Hathersage team is now set to run three cars in the national Formula Renault UK Championship as well.

With Idafar and Lyons both graduating to Formula Renault UK from Hillspeed’s Formula Renault BARC ranks, the ultra-professional squad is keen to hear from any drivers interested in competing alongside the duo in the high-profile British Touring Car Championship-supporting series.

“Obviously we’re delighted to have five drivers confirmed already across the two Renault championships but we’re keen to expand the Formula Renault UK side of our operation to three cars as we plan to make a major impact on the series this year”, said team principal Richard Ollerenshaw.

Hillspeed’s expansion comes as the team steps to one side, for the time being, regarding the Juno Racing UK Formula Ford Championship project which it has been involved with for over a year.

While UK Formula Ford itself looks in good health for the coming season, there has been a distinct lack of interest from potential drivers in the new Juno chassis which, although having tested fairly well, is still an unproven car since its arrival on the scene late last year.

Ollerenshaw commented: “The partnership forged between Hillspeed and Juno Racing is still active and we will continue to work together in the future. For the time being, it makes no sense for Hillspeed to continue to press on with the running of the Juno chassis in UK Formula Ford with the lack of driver interest compared to what we are seeing for UK and BARC Formula Renault.

“Our programme in Formula Renault UK and Formula Renault BARC will certainly keep us busy this year. We have the capability to run more cars in both championships so we’re very keen to sign drivers. We welcome any enquiries from interested parties.”
