Motors TV Weekly Highlights

7th – 13th March

Geneva Motorshow

The motor industry’s most glitzy affair returns with its class of 2009 to give this recession nonsense a damn good clip round the ear. This crown jewel of automotive flashiness usually guarantees a surprise or two, whilst there are always plenty of debuts to drool over. With spinning stands earmarked for Aston Martin’s new, even faster V12 Vantage, a baby Rolls Royce (that’s bigger than a BMW 7-Series) and drop top Fiat 500, along with a bunch of people carriers and bio-fuel stuff shoved in the corner, this is the hottest TV ticket in town. Good job you’re invited, then.

Just in time for a new season of V8 Supercar action, Motors TV thought it necessary to remind you all at home of how 2008’s championship went down. In what will surely be remembered in the eons of television history as a production miracle, we’ve managed to cram all 13 rounds into a neat 30 minute summary. Incredible. Anyway, it’s the perfect precursor to this year’s campaign which kicks off on the High Speed Television Channel just a week later.

AMA SupercrossAs regular as the Swiss transport system, the AMA Supercross championship makes its obligatory appearance in your weekly listings. This time it’s the turn of round seven from California’s Qualcomm stadium where James Stewart will be out to extend a five-race winning streak. Superbike School: UKPart three of British television’s only worthwhile reality show features more visor down action from the Californian Superbike School pupils. This week we take a peek into the life of racer Al Fagan. As a journalist for Fast Bikes magazine and a British Supersport racer, he spends all day talking, writing and riding bikes which isn’t bad, I suppose, if you like that sort of thing. Derek and Sheela meanwhile do the in-no-way-Strictly-Come-Dancing-related Two Step with Andy Ibbott. Annoyingly for the riders but great for television, the heavens open, leaving me the chance to use the clever phrase, “crash course in wet weather riding.”SS:UK, Episode 3Friday, 13th March, 20:30

 Rally Report

Those tuning in hoiping to find a snowball splattered Tony Mason are sure to be disappointed. That’s because we’ve nicked the title but left the coverage of BBC Two’s mid 90’s gravel/asphalt/snow show on the cutting room floor to bring you bang up-to-date news from across the globe. This week, Rally Report features a European round-up followed by a special Dakar review. Rally ReportSaturday, 7th March, 14:00Jeep Willy’s StoryMore documentary madness coming your way this week ladies and gents as Motors TV delves into the archives and pulls out a biography on the first proper off-road 4x4, the Willy’s Jeep. The story follows its birth in Normandy during World War II and charts the evolutionary curve since, from the inspiration it had on later designs like Land Rover’s Defender, to the development of the machine itself.
