Dams Formula BMW, Rnd 1, Barcelona

This weekend DAMS kicked off its 2009 Formula BMW Europe season. The team's drivers were Jim Pla, already with the squad last year, and two rookies, Javier Tarancon and Côme Ledogar.

As is usually the case in monotype series, the performances are very close and the team had its fair share of upsets, collisions and near misses. It managed to come out with honours scoring points at the start of the championship with 2 of its drivers.

Next round: Zandvoort 12th – 14th June (during the F3 Masters).

Eric Boullier, team manager: “The first round of a championship is always special, and I think we've got our 2009 campaign off to a good start. Our drivers had the right approach throughout the weekend, and even if the results could have been better, we're pretty optimistic for the rest of the season.”

Javier Tarancon Race 1: 3rd on the grid, 5th at the finish + a 25-second penalty Race 2: 3rd on the grid, 5th at the finish

“I'm reasonably happy with my first weekend in Formula BMW. I saw that I was competitive in qualifying even if the races were a bit more difficult. My penalty on Saturday deprived me of a points finish, but I opened my score Sunday by coming home fifth. I could have done better if my wing hadn't been damaged at the start of the race in a minor collision. My performance this weekend is encouraging for the rest of the season."

Jim Pla Race 1: 8th on the grid, 11th at the finish Race 2: 9th on the grid, 8th at the finish

“My weekend was decided in qualifying. I had the potential to start from fourth but I wasn't able to take full advantage of it. Starting from so far back makes it impossible to get to the front, as the Barcelona circuit is not good for overtaking. In addition, a small technical problem on saturday slowed me at the end of the race. So overall it's been a mixed weekend. I know I've got the speed to fight at the front in the championship, as my times are as quick as those of the front-runners. But my finishing positions could be better. I'll get back on the right track at Zandvoort.”
