SHEFFIELD snatched a dramatic last-race victory at Plymouth in the Devil's first official fixture as a Premier League club.A 5-1 to the home side in the penultimate heat put them one point ahead, but Sheffield turned it back around in the decider thanks to Shane Parker and Emiliano Sanchez.Tigers co-promoter David Hoggart said: "We're delighted with the win, and it certainly wasn't an easy one. Plymouth threw absolutely everything at us, and we had a number of fallers."Shane Parker must be our new Messiah with what he's done for us this week, and Emiliano was involved in some of the best racing of the night. There was a great atmosphere and we got the result we wanted."

SOMERSET maintained their position at the top of the Premier League by taking maximum points against Newcastle - despite a late Diamonds' fightback. The Rebels, who tracked the perfect guest in Jason Doyle who scored a 15-point maximum, were coasting at 33-15 up, but two successful Newcastle tactical rides meant they could have taken a point with a 5-1 in the last race.Somerset boss Steve Bishop said: "Newcastle certainly made us fight for every point, and although it may have looked at the half-way stage that we were well on our way to victory, they refused to lie down. "But at the end of the day, we still won by more than six points, which is all that is required to get the maximum three points for a home win and that has to be our main objective from each of our home matches."

NEW Edinburgh reserve Kyle Howarth enjoyed a dream debut with a score of nine (paid 12) in the Monarchs' comfortable home win over Scunthorpe.Howarth, who only joined the club earlier in the week, picked up three paid wins and also gave a strong challenge to David Howe when the Scorpions' skipper was going for double-points.Home captain Matthew Wethers scored a paid maximum in the 60-32 win, with the reigning champions being described as better balanced already following their lower-order changes.Promoter John Campbell said: "That was more like it, and what a difference it made to have a really effective rider at reserve."

EASTBOURNE boss Trevor Geer could not hide his frustration that a thunderstorm had prevented the completion of the Eagles' Friday night clash with Swindon. The Elite League leaders were 24-12 up when torrential rain hit the stadium, and the referee had no option but to call the meeting off.Geer said: "Swindon have turned up with a team stronger than they normally are with their guests, but we have taken them apart really. It's a shame that the weather has put paid to it."We didn't expect to lose like we did at Poole, so we really had to win this one at home. It's a big disappointment that we have had to abandon the meeting."
