Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup newcomer Tim Harvey and category mainstay Nathan Freke shared the wins at Croft in North Yorkshire on Sunday, 19th June, but a second podium of the weekend for Carl Breeze enabled him to overhaul Tom Sharp at the head of the driver standings.Sharp’s once substantial points lead was heavily eroded throughout the weekend and despite a third place finish in round 13, a non-finish for the IDL driver in round 14 – after contact with the car of Stefan Hodgetts while dicing for the final podium spot – means he is now 13 points adrift of Breeze. After making a terrific debut at the wheel of a Total Control Racing Ginetta G55 on Saturday, former British Touring Car Champion and double Porsche Carrera Cup GB title winner Harvey used his vast experience and proven racecraft to take a very popular win in the first of Sunday’s races. Even more impressive was the fact he came through from the very back of the grid to achieve it.“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this weekend, I certainly didn’t expect to win from last on the grid”, said Harvey, “The boys at TCR repaired the car after the mishap yesterday and it felt great, I really did enjoy the race. I feel like I’ve found a little home for myself in Ginetta but this is very much a one-off outing at this stage!”Conditions were tricky with a drying track and a rain shower at mid-distance but Harvey scythed his way through to take the lead on lap five when Sharp, who had a huge six second lead at that point, spun off entering the complex. Glancing the tyre barrier with the rear of his car, the erstwhile points leader luckily managed to recover to finish third behind Hodgetts. At the beginning of round 13, a number of drivers were absent from the grid after making late calls on running slick tyres – these included Freke, Adam Morgan, George Murrells and G50 Cup runners Aaron Williamson and Jake Hill. Therefore, Colin White started from pole position and led away from G50 Cup points leader Tom Ingram who managed to leapfrog Breeze off the line with Sharp rocketing into the top four from the penultimate row of the grid.Of the front four, Sharp was very much the driver on the move and he moved into second place halfway around the opening lap before passing White for lead at the chicane on lap two. Ingram, running wet tyres, started to suffer and slipped back behind Breeze and Harvey.Heavy rainfall descended on the track on lap five and the sudden downpour caught-out Sharp who was the first on the scene at the complex. Harvey went past to take the lead, which he held all the way to the finish on lap 10, with Hodgetts managing to get ahead of Sharp at the end of lap six.Several others also came to grief at the complex, Ingram the most notable as he ended up in the barriers and into retirement. Fellow G50 runners Lee Pattison and Jody Fannin also went off on the slippery surface, as did G55 driver White, but all three at least recovered to finish.Harvey controlled the race at the front and took the win, in only his second ever Ginetta race, by one second from Hodgetts. Sharp finished third, some 10 seconds adrift, with Freke fighting through the order very well into fourth, ahead of Breeze and Morgan. In the G50 class, Andrew Richardson drove a great race to secure his second win in seventh overall ahead of Williamson and Hill – although the latter was excluded post-race for overtaking under yellow flags. Richardson commented: “Aside from the conditions my clutch gave up halfway through so I had to be really careful on the gear changes. In the end though, it all worked out well.”Breeze assumes points lead as Freke continues on the winning trailBreeze led away from pole position at the start of the final race of the weekend, heading Freke, Hodgetts, Sharp, Morgan and Harvey – White having spun out of the lead group at Clervaux on the first lap.More misfortune followed for Ingram too, another excursion at the complex – exactly the same place he went off in the earlier race – led to a big impact with the barriers and he eventually retired after being shown the black and orange flag due to the damage to his car.Freke piled on the pressure and on lap four he made his move at Hawthorn to pass Breeze for the lead before pulling away to a dominant victory of nine seconds. Behind the new leader positions remained unchanged until lap seven when Harvey made his way past Morgan for fifth at Sunny, the latter having problems with a dislodged bonnet. The most dramatic moment of the race came on lap eight when Sharp tried a late cut-back into the complex in a bid to unseat Hodgetts from third place. Contact was inevitable and both went off, leading to a Safety Car period.Racing resumed on lap 14 and Freke set about building his eroded lead once more which he did with ease. Breeze held second place but was coming under pressure from Harvey, that was until the latter was tagged at the hairpin by Murrells and pitched into a spin.On the final tour, lap 18, White was the new challenger for Breeze’s second place but an attempted move at Tower was rebuffed and he ran out of road on the exit. Then, into the complex, fourth and fifth placed drivers Murrells and Alistair James went off on the grass just before White spun out of third at the hairpin. All of this promoted G50 leader Aaron Williamson to a superb third overall just ahead of Pattison, Fannin and Hill who all finished nose-to-tail. Morgan took seventh while White recovered in eighth and Murrells dragged his damaged car over the line in ninth as the final classified finisher.New points leader Breeze commented: “We had some trouble in the first race, I wasn’t too confident with the car in those conditions so I drove with the championship in mind. With Tom (Sharp) off the road in the second one though it’s worked out well for us.”The whole Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship ‘TOCA Tour’ now takes a lengthy seven week break from action over the summer.
