Dixon Planning On Winning Double As Clio Season Resumes

Following a lengthy seven week summer break, AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK will make a welcome return to action next weekend, 6th/7th August, at Snetterton 300 Circuit in Norfolk and championship contender James Dixon is aiming for a clean sweep of pole positions and race wins. Stockbury-based James, who has his sights set on graduating to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in 2012 if the required funding can be secured, has been a title threat from the off in Clio Cup this year - only his second season of saloon car competition. Driving for the hugely successful Total Control Racing team, the 21-year-old Kent racer has led the championship on a couple of occasions with three victories to his credit so far, along with two other podiums, from the 10 races contested up to now.  At Croft last time out, in mid-June, James went back to the top of the championship during the first of the weekend's races but a highly unfortunate non-finish during the second encounter meant he ended the event third in standings - albeit only seven points shy of the top. Having been fast and a double podium finisher at Snetterton during the track's previous guise last year, the ABP Heating, Weidmuller and The Art of Decorating-sponsored racer is confident he can challenge for even better results on the newly configured '300 Circuit' next weekend. "Looking back at last year, we had a pretty awesome result at Snetterton with one pole and two second places", said James, "Obviously we'll be on the new circuit this time but I've had a test there and we were pretty quick so I'm looking forward to it. We need to go for two wins to get back to the top of the championship.  "I've been training so hard at the gym over the last few weeks during the break, I want this title so badly - for my sponsors, my family and I want to achieve it for TCR too. It's been a while since they won the championship and I want to be the one who puts the trophy back in their cabinet. Hopefully we'll be able to fight for the double pole and two wins at Snetterton, that's what I'm aiming for." While the immediate goal is Snetterton success and, ultimately, the Clio Cup title, James has one eye on next year and he's currently working very hard to try and secure the budget to enable him to step up to the BTCC. Clio Cup has long been a main feeder category for touring cars and James knows graduation to the UK's premier championship next year is key to his career development. He added: "I want to be in the BTCC without any doubt at all next year, that's where we have to be and we're working really hard to sort that out and try and get the budget we need - it's a big task though. The priority is to win Clios but a move to the BTCC next year is what we need to do." In other news, James is delighted to be able to confirm his involvement in the non-championship 'Cross Channel Challenge' for Clio Cup competitors from across Europe which will take place at the World Series by Renault at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on 20th/21st August.  Thanks to the financial support of sponsor Weidmuller, James will be able to line up on the grid at one of the UK's biggest race meetings - second only to the FIA Formula One World Championship's British Grand Prix in terms of spectator attendance. Returning to next weekend's action at Snetterton 300 Circuit, following pre-event practice on Friday, 5th August, qualifying for rounds 11 and 12 will take place at 11.40 on Saturday, 6th August, with race one getting underway at 17.05. On Sunday, 7th August, the second encounter will get underway at 11.15 and will be screened live across the UK on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4 and in High Definition on ITV4 HD. Live streaming will also be carried at .itv.com/touringcars Provisional 2011 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK Championship Standings (after Rd10): 1st Paul Rivett, 224pts; 2nd Aron Smith, 221pts; 3rd James
