Formula One Veteran Mark Blundell To Make Watkins Glen Debut

‏Formula One veteran Mark Blundell is set for his first race at the circuit that has played a huge role in Grand Prix history this weekend.

Blundell rejoins Zak Brown in the No. 23 United Autosports Ford/Riley fielded by Michael Shank Racing to race at the home of the United States Grand Prix from 1961-1980.

Blundell and Brown finished fourth in the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, while Blundell finished sixth at Homestead-Miami Speedway in his only other Rolex Series appearance.

Blundell ran four full seasons in Formula One (1991-94), scoring three podium finishes, and was a three-time winner in five years racing Champ Car (1996-2000). He was a pole winner (1990) and second-place finisher (2003) in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Also back in the DP lineup is the No. 61 AIM Autosport GAMMA 88 BMW/Riley of Mark Wil-kins and Burt Friselle. The team is running a limited schedule this season. Wilkins gave AIM Autosport its first victory in the 2008 Watkins Glen 200, co-driving with Brian Frisselle.

James Gue and Leh Keen prevailed in the 2010 Watkins Glen 200, with Keen leading the final three laps to give Dempsey Racing its first victory in Rolex Series competition. The No. 41 Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle Mazda RX-8 returns with Gue joined by Dane Cameron. They are coming off their best finish of the season, third at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Eric Foss and Patrick Lindsey will co-drive the No. 73 Traxxas Porsche GT3 as Horton Autosport makes its Rolex Series debut at The Glen.Also making its series debut is Alliance Auto-sport, with Scott Rettich and Mark Jensen co-driving the No. 97 PDI Communication Systems/Springboro Car Wash Porsche GT3.

Team Sahlen brings a local driver and sponsor to Watkins Glen – along with plenty of momen-tum in the Rolex Series GT ranks.

The addition of John Edwards has energized the team, which has two second-place finishes in the last three races. Both Edwards and Wayne Nonnamaker won poles in the No. 42 TheRace-Site.com Mazda RX-8. Nonnamaker led 28 laps and Edwards six en route to a second-place finish in the most recent race at New Jersey.

Joe Sahlen of Elma, N.Y., owner of Buffalo-based Sahlen’s premium meat products, co-drives the No. 49 Mazda RX-8 with Will Nonna-maker. The car is sponsored by the Western New York Flash, a Sahlen-owned team which currently is tied for first place with Philadelphia in Women’s Professional Soccer.

Michael Marsal of Bedford, N.Y. will race for the second time in the No. 93 Turner Motorsport BMW M3, joining Joey Hand—his co-driver for the team in the Continental Tire Challenge.
