Skip Barber National weekend review

Strong Weekend for Hindman and Anderson

As the races dwindle down in the 2011 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda, the battle for the championship, as well as the grand prize of scholarships for the 2012 USF2000 race season, remains open.  Scott Anderson had another successful weekend, finishing on both podiums of the double header event at Autobahn Country Club. Points runner up Brandon Newey is still fighting strong, also earning a podium finish in Round 13. The weekend was filled with a variety of weather conditions including rain, fog and perfectly sunny conditions. The young racers adapted with each change in conditions to put on another weekend filled with spectacular racing.  Trent Hindman jumped from second to third in the championship standings, just ten points behind points leader Scott Anderson. Only two races remain in the season as drivers race Rounds 15 and 16 at Lime Rock Park October 6-8, 2011.

Round 13California Scents Pole sitter Sebastian Ordonez made a good jump at the green flag to gain a five car length lead after the first corners of Autobahn Country Club. MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman also made a successful start, holding the second position by a solid five car lengths.  Shelby Blackstock had his hands full as Brandon Newey and Franco Aragones battled hard for position. In lap three, Brandon Newey made a strong pass on Blackstock for fourth position and started to create space between his competitor and catch up to the leaders. Meanwhile, Hindman slowly started to reel in the pole sitter, reducing the leader’s gap by two car lengths. Points leader Scott Anderson was further back, racing up in third position.

Blackstock and Franco Aragones put on some incredible racing for those in attendance, racing nose-to-tail for the majority of the seventeen lap event. Although they were racing against each other, they still managed to work together to try to catch up to Newey, who had gained a good gap. In lap 14, Trent Hindman caught up to Ordonez, and skillfully passed him for the lead. Before the end of the lap, Ordonez suffered a mechanical issue and was forced to retire early with just three laps to go. With over a four second lead, Hindman earned the win, followed by Scott Anderson and Brandon Newey.

Round 14MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman started Round 14 on pole, but just as in the previous day’s race, Sebastian Ordonez had a great opening lap, and created a five length lead which quickly expanded to a ten car length lead by the end of the first lap.  Hindman raced close behind in second with Scott Anderson on his heels, but losing ground.  MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Danilo Estrela started seventh and by lap three, he had worked his way up the field to pass Brandon Newey for fifth position.  In the same lap, Shelby Blackstock passed Scott Anderson and pulled away as he started to close in on Hindman in second. The pair found themselves working together to catch back up to Hindman and Ordonez who had gained significant ground at the rest of the pack.

Meanwhile, Newey worked to reel in Estrela, racing in fifth.  With each lap, Newey slowly inched closer to the Brazilian, but Estrela still held the position. Anderson and Blackstock continued to race for third, with Anderson holding the position.  In lap twelve, Anderson had a slight wobble coming out of turn four, giving Blackstock a small advantage, but not enough to take the position. The drivers had slight contact, but were both able to continue, with Anderson taking home the third spot on the podium. Sebastian Ordonez had a perfect race, winning over Trent Hindman by 5.465 seconds.
