Seventh Podium Of Season Boosts Dixons Title Hopes

AirAsia Renault Clip Cup UK title contender James Dixon raced back into second position in the championship at Rockingham in Northamptonshire on Sunday, 18th September, thanks to his seventh podium of 2011.Moving the 21-year-old from Kent to within just three points of the series lead, the result could prove to be crucial to his chances of claiming his first car racing championship with the final event of the season set to take place on home soil at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit a fortnight from now.Stockbury-based James arrived at Rockingham this weekend some 15 points behind erstwhile points leader Paul Rivett but a topsy turvy race meeting for the chief title challengers means the top four in the championship go to Brands Hatch, during the first weekend of October, split by only four points."We're going to Brands in the fight for the championship which has been the plan since the start of the season, we're there and we'll give it everything we've got", said James, "I'm disappointed we couldn't win this weekend to be honest, I don't like finishing second, but we've done what we needed to do by taking away some good points."The biggest thing was to make sure we finished both races strongly and we did that. Everything is unbelievably tight in the championship now, it's all to play for so I'm really looking forward to going back to Brands Hatch and doing the best we possibly can. I want that title, for me and the team."Qualifying on Saturday, 17th September, didn't quite go as well as the Total Control Racing driver had hoped but he still managed to seal fourth on the grid for round 13 and an improved third for round 14 thanks to a consistently strong second quickest time during the red-flag interrupted session.Getting away well at the beginning of the weekend's opening encounter, James held fourth through Turn One but was shuffled back to sixth out of Deene Hairpin - always a corner which tends to invite contact and one which can quickly result in an enforced retirement.Taking a sensible approach, the ABP Heating, Weidmuller and The Art of Decorating-supported racer didn't attempt any risks and although slipping to seventh on lap two he quickly reclaimed sixth when Luke Wright retired.Following a brief Safety Car intervention to recover Wright's car, racing got back underway on lap five and James maintained sixth place all the way to the finish on lap 15, sandwiched between title rivals James Colburn and Paul Rivett. For Sunday's live televised 14th round, James held on to third place at the start and then grabbed second from Colburn at Deene to cap a great first couple of corners. Pulling two seconds clear of the chasing pack by the start of lap three, the TCR man intended to try and reel-in pole position starter Jack Goff but in the end he focused on consolidating the runner-up spot and its valuable points tally.During the second half of the encounter, Colburn did begin to apply significant pressure but James soaked it up superbly and didn't put a wheel wrong as he drove an inch-perfect race to make a richly deserved seventh visit of 2011 to the Clio Cup podium. With just two weeks remaining until the destiny of the 2011 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK title is decided, James will head to his home track as one of a total of five drivers who can realistically win the coveted championship. Rounds 15 and 16 will take place over the weekend 1st/2nd October.Provisional 2011 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK Championship Standings (after Rd14):1st Aron Smith, 298pts; 2nd James Dixon, 295pts; 3rd Paul Rivett, 294pts; 4th James Colburn, 294pts
