Gelzinis clinches Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am1 title
Lithuanian racer Jonas Gelzinis became the first 2011 champion to be crowned in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB after round 16 of the season at Brands Hatch on Saturday (1 October). With his tenth Pro-Am1 win from 16 races, Gelzinis took an unassailable lead in the Pro-Am1 category with three races left to run. The 23-year old from Kaunas started karting at the age of seven and first came to race in the Carrera Cup GB for the 2010 season when he finished second in Pro-Am1. This year he returned with the family-run Juta Racing team and built on the experience gained in his first season in the UK.“I have really enjoyed the season,” said Gelzinis. “I have not always been as consistent as I would like to be, but I have good speed. Nurburgring was one of my best races because I had never driven on the track before.”Gelzinis now says that he wants to try and move up to fifth in the overall championship. “I have one more target now and that is to overtake Richard Plant in the overall standings,” he said. Currently, Plant is 10 points ahead. However, Gelzinis and the team have already turned their thoughts to the 2012 season and are planning another campaign in the Carrera Cup GB. “Next year I want to come back and join the Pro category and fight for the championship,” he said.
