Aviva Cofco announces WTCC entry

Aviva-Cofco announced today that it will enter two races in the 2011 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) events in Asia.  WSR’s BTCC Champion, Colin Turkington, will race for team Aviva-Cofco Wiechers Sport in Suzuka, Japan, between 21 and 23 October and in Shanghai, China, between 4 and 6 November.

Turkington, who will drive a BMW 320 TC, claimed four podium finishes out of ten WTCC races in 2007 and 2010.  This included a victory in Okayama in 2010.

Simon Machell, Chief Executive of Aviva Asia Pacific, said: “The World Touring Car Championship is a prestigious global motorsport event.  We are pleased to announce that Aviva-Cofco is sponsoring Colin Turkington in the World Touring Car Championship rounds in Suzuka (Japan) and Shanghai (China).  These events serve as a great platform for us to enhance the awareness of the Aviva brand in Asia.

“Once again, we are delighted to be a part of the season and have every confidence in Colin delivering exceptional performances.  We will be inviting over 300 customers and partners to the event in Shanghai.  This allows us to connect with them via our shared passion for teamwork, innovation and performance.  We look forward to treating them to a unique experience.”

Colin Turkington added: “I’m delighted to be racing for Aviva-Cofco in the WTCC in Japan and China.  I’ve had some great races for the company in Macau and Okayama (Japan), and can’t wait to get back in the car and drive for them again.”

“I raced for Wiechers Sport earlier this season at the Donington WTCC event, where we were the fastest BMW and fastest Independent.”

Dick Bennetts, Team Principal for WSR, commented: “We look forward to working with Aviva-Cofco and teaming up with Wiechers Sport.  We have a great relationship with both companies and are confident in producing solid results on the track.”

Dominik Greiner, Team Manager of Wiechers Sport, said: “It’s great to be working with both Colin and WSR and to represent a leading brand like Aviva-Cofco.  Colin raced for us at Donington Park this year so we are fully aware of his exceptional talent.

“Suzuka and Shanghai will be new tracks to many of the drivers in the Championship.  We believe that this is to our advantage as one of Colin’s strengths is his ability to get accustomed to new circuits very quickly.  We look forward to the races and delivering great results.”
