Michael Lyons wins Derek Bell Trophy in Silverstone Historic Racing finals day

Michael Lyons finished the GT season at the last round of the European championship in Zandvoort – Holland last weekend with a triumphant podium and this bought an end to the season for him in modern racing. This weekend though saw him back in his thunderous F5000 car competing in the last round of the Derek Bell Trophy at Silverstone Circuit – uniquely against both of his parents as well as others on this competitive grid of 18.The HSCC (Historic Sports Car Club) Finals was a chance for Michael to grab victory in the Trophy and also for his father Frank Lyons to finish in an historic second place in the series for Team Lyons.Qualifying set the tone for how this event was going to play out and Michael duly set the fastest time by 1.5 seconds ahead of second place and easily secured Pole Position.Come the race, Michael simply set off into the distance once it began – setting the fastest lap along the way. It was an inspired race, which was a perfect way to round off the F5000 season by securing Pole, Fastest lap and race victory as well as winning the Derek Bell Trophy.The victory was Michael’s thirteenth of the year. To add to the emotion of the day, Frank Lyons also secured second in the series making it a unique day where father and son finished one and two against such a competitive field.After the race Michael said;“2011 has been a long year of racing for me, but a very happy one. To finish third in the British GT championship in my first year in the championship and then follow that up with all the wins I have taken in F5000 and historic F1 is unreal.”“To end the year by finishing the Derek Bell Trophy first and second with my Dad is amazing too and it also feels like a fitting way to say thank you for all his support this year.”“I want to say thank you to Team Lyons for all their support in my racing this year both modern and historics and hope next year can be as successful and fun!” Michael will now begin to plan his racing programme for 2012 in GT racing and historics.
