Edmonds finishes fifth in Maxxis Apico Suzuki debut

After agreeing terms to race for the Maxxis Apico Suzuki team in selected rounds of the British Supercross Championship only last week, 23 year-old Stuart Edmonds impressed the crowds on Saturday evening, racing to a great fifth place finish in the Open Class Final.

With less than an hour of practice on the Maxxis Apico RM-Z250, Edmonds went into the opening round of the series with a lot to learn, but stepped up to the plate, despite a crash in a heat race.

Opting to enter the head-to-head race, the Maxxis Apico Suzuki rider triumphed over 2011 British MX and Red Bull Champ, Brand Anderson, with a blistering performance to take the win, before riding a consistent Open Final race to finish in fifth place.

Stuart Edmonds: "On the whole a very positive start to the Supercorss series. I've had next to no time at all on the bike, so it was a steep learning curve, but Rob and the team build a great bike and gave me a package I could challenge on. The head to head race was great fun especially against Brad and if I hadn't made that mistake in the last chance race then we could have had a pair of strong final finishes. I'm looking forward to the next round of the series now, especially with more time on the bike."

Teammate Lewis Gregory had a less positive start to his Supercross season despite qualifying in second spot for both classes. Sadly for Lewis, the amount of racing was just a little too much, as he builds up his race fitness, finishing eighth in the Lites Final before a crash in the Open Final put paid to a better result."

Team manager, Rob Hooper: "A great start from Stuart considering his lack of time on the bike. His pace is impressive and he's consistent too. Lewis looked in great shape at the start of the evening, and for the open class we had our riders in second and third, which was a great position to be in. However, Lewis just needs more race time under his belt, which is what let him down in the end, but regardless of this we move onto the next round with two riders that are feeling positive and ready to challenge again."
